In a video posted to social media, viewed 1.1 million times, Dr. Karan Rajan, a doctor working at the UK's National Institute of Health , called his simple method "maximizing fiber intake." Research shows that fiber plays an important role in preventing bowel cancer. Bowel Cancer UK estimates that a lack of fiber is the cause of nearly a third of bowel cancer cases, according to the Daily Mail.

Dr. Rajan notes that to get your daily fiber intake, it's as simple as combining three ingredients, each containing 5 grams of fiber, from the following foods: a small handful of pistachios or almonds, 100 grams of peas, 50 grams of dark chocolate, or 75 grams of beans.
Additionally, apples, avocados, or pears are also rich in fiber, so combine any three to provide 15 grams of fiber.
When you get fiber from three different sources in this way, you also get different phytonutrients, polyphenols, and prebiotic fibers, all of which impact the gut microbiome and have specific effects, Rajan continues.
Fiber is a type of carbohydrate found in plants that is not absorbed by the body. Instead, it helps keep the intestines healthy and functioning properly.
This nutrient is found in whole grains, beans, peas, nuts, fruits and vegetables.

Why is fiber a weapon against colon cancer?
Research published in early 2025 by the University of California San Diego (USA) shows that E-coli infection due to food poisoning causes intestinal damage - the cause of increased cases of bowel cancer.
Experts have also previously explained that fibre may help protect against intestinal infections, which are thought to be linked to an increase in bowel cancer cases.
Dr Alasdair Scott, a consultant gastroenterologist and surgical oncologist at the UK's National Health Service, said high fibre intake was one way to combat harmful E.coli bacteria in the gut.
There is not much people can do if E. coli bacteria contribute to early-onset colon cancer, he said. But a high-fibre diet may protect against the type of mutation that causes tumours to grow, according to the Daily Mail.
Bowel cancer is on the rise in young people, with rates three times higher than in older people.
Cancer Research UK estimates that up to 54% of bowel cancer cases are preventable. Known risk factors include a low-fibre diet, too much red or processed meat and obesity.
