Published in the scientific journal Nutrients, the research team led by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and Leiden University Medical Center (Netherlands) said they followed 7,381 people, both men and women, for nearly 22 years to study the impact of coffee and tea drinking habits on the brain.

The main goal is to determine which drinks and how to drink them can help reverse dementia - a group of incurable diseases, the most common of which is Alzheimer's - for which scientists around the world have been trying to invent a cure but have not yet succeeded.

After 22 years, all participants were over 70 years old and were screened for cognitive impairment.

The results showed that men who drank "a bit too much" coffee at 4-5 cups/day benefited the most, significantly reducing the risk of dementia compared to those who did not drink or drank only 1 cup.

However, the results also show that drinking too much coffee is not good for both sexes, especially women. In terms of Alzheimer's disease, the group that drank 4-7 cups of coffee per day had an increased risk when considering both men and women. Given the benefits for men, women should be careful with this number, even in the absence of genetic risk.

Additionally, drinking more than six cups a day also increased the risk of mild cognitive impairment in both sexes. The risk of dementia was most pronounced in women who drank more than eight cups of coffee a day.

The research team found no correlation between this group of diseases and tea.

According to the authors, coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world, so specifically examining the benefits and risks of different levels of consumption is of great value in public health management.

Meanwhile, dementia is on the rise globally and is among the top 10 causes of premature death worldwide, as well as severely reducing the quality of life of people with the disease.

This group of diseases is predicted to be a huge health burden as the population ages, so scientists around the world are still trying to find a cure as well as identify available prevention options - such as changing diet and lifestyle.
