Teachers and students "grab" medals
Returning to teaching right after winning the gold medal in the 32nd SEA Games with his teammates in Vovinam, teacher Le Duc Duy - physical education teacher at Bui Thi Xuan High School (District 1, Ho Chi Minh City) was surrounded by students who admired and asked questions.
This is the second SEA Games that this teacher has participated in as a member of the Vietnamese Vovinam team. Previously, Mr. Le Duc Duy competed in the 31st SEA Games and won a silver medal with his teammates.
The first major playground that this teacher-athlete competed in and won a gold medal was the National Vovinam Youth Tournament in 2002. This was also the stepping stone for Mr. Duy to become a professional athlete, competing in national and international tournaments, bringing home many prestigious gold medals for the team, such as the world gold medal in 2009 and 2011; the Asian gold medal in 2018...
Talking about his fate with the profession, Mr. Duy said: "In 6th grade, when I saw my brother practicing Vovinam, out of curiosity I asked my parents to learn. At first I just thought I was learning for fun, but then I became addicted without realizing it. Since my university days, I started participating in amateur competitions, then district, city, national competitions..., becoming a professional athlete, and sticking with it until now is a fate."
During her journey as a professional athlete, this teacher said that the Board of Directors of Bui Thi Xuan High School always created conditions for her to fulfill both roles well - teacher and athlete.
"I feel luckier than other professional athletes because in addition to my family, I also have a strong support system of students, colleagues, and parents who support and encourage me. During the time I competed in Cambodia, my students and colleagues often texted me to ask about me. This is the motivation for me to always try to practice and compete, especially in this SEA Games because the team's goal is to change the color of the medal compared to the previous one" - teacher Le Duc Duy shared.

At the 32nd SEA Games, many university lecturers also participated as athletes and won medals.
Participating in the final of the women's self-defense competition in Vovinam, with an excellent performance, lecturer Nguyen Thi Hoai Nuong - FPT University, Ho Chi Minh City branch and her teammates brought Vietnam another gold medal.
Previously, Ms. Nuong and her teammates also won a silver medal in the mixed basic technical team event.
Teacher Nguyen Thi Hoai Nuong shared that on the competition day of May 8, Vietnam had not won any medals in the performance category, so she was very nervous. With the enthusiastic cheers from the athletes and the encouragement from the coaching staff, she and athlete Nguyen Hoang Du reduced half of the pressure.
With over 20 years of experience practicing and competing professionally in Vovinam, instructor Hoai Nuong has won many national and regional achievements.
Teacher Nuong shared that she came to teach at FPT University because of her passion for imparting the techniques and spirit of Vovinam martial arts to young people. Interacting with students every day, not only in the martial arts school but also in experiential activities with female athletes is a great joy.
However, balancing teaching and competing is not easy because the intensity of work and training must be maintained at a high level, but she always receives support from colleagues and FPT University students to complete her teaching and competing.
Teacher Hoai Nuong's colleague, Vovinam instructor Nguyen Quoc Cuong, also made his mark with the kick attack at the 32nd SEA Games and brought home a Silver medal for the Vietnamese team.
The male athlete shared that participating in this SEA Games, he was supported by the school's leadership, creating conditions from class placement to mental encouragement.
The first gold medal of the Vietnamese sports delegation at the 32nd SEA Games was in Karate with the contribution of student Nguyen Thi Phuong - Faculty of Physical Education , Hanoi National University of Education. In addition to contributing the team gold medal, student Nguyen Thi Phuong also won a silver medal in individual kata.
