In this qualifying round, Nhi Yen competed in the second group. Wearing bib number 2494, she started in lane 7. The Vietnamese athlete's reaction time after the starting gun was quite fast, only 0.165 seconds. Thanks to this, the runner from Long An had a good start, finishing first in the second group with a time of 11.81 seconds.
Nhi Yen's outstanding sprint finish.
With this result, Nhi Yen secured a spot in the first qualifying round. The 2005-born athlete finished 7th out of 27 in the preliminary round. Nhi Yen was still unable to break her personal best. Her best time in the women's 100m was 11.40 seconds – a time that earned her a silver medal at the U.20 Asian Athletics Championships in the UAE at the end of April. However, her performance in her first Olympic appearance is highly commendable.
Nhi Yen secured a spot in Round 1.
Hopefully, in the first qualifying round taking place at 4:50 PM today, Nhi Yen will break her personal best. This is also the goal she set before the Olympics. Nhi Yen is a rising talent in Vietnamese athletics. She has only competed professionally for two years but has shown great potential, notably reaching the finals in two events at the 19th Asian Games.
Nhi Yen deserves a wildcard entry to the Paris Olympics.
That is why the Vietnam Athletics Federation granted this athlete a wildcard entry to the Paris Olympics so that she could gain experience and develop even more strongly in the future.
At the age of 19, Nhi Yen has already achieved enviable accomplishments. Born in 2005, she won two gold medals in the 200m and 100m events at the 2022 National Games and the 2023 National Championships, one silver medal in the 200m and one bronze medal in the 100m at the 32nd SEA Games, ranked 6th in the 100m at the 2023 Asian Athletics Championships, and reached the finals of both the 100m and 200m at the 19th Asian Games.
It can be said that Nhi Yen is the athlete with the fastest and strongest progress in Vietnamese athletics in recent times, from participating in the 2022 National Sports Games to the 32nd SEA Games, the 19th Asian Games, and now the 2024 Paris Olympics.
“Participating in the 2024 Olympic Games is my dream, and it's a great source of pride for me. My goal at the Olympics is to try my best to surpass my own best performance,” Nhi Yen said .
Nhi Yen is considered a potential successor to Southeast Asia's "Queen of Speed," Le Tu Chinh, in the 100m and 200m races for Vietnamese athletics in the future. Coincidentally, this runner from Long An is currently receiving dedicated guidance from coach Nguyen Thi Thanh Huong, who previously coached Le Tu Chinh.
Sharing about the preparation process of the two of them for the Paris 2024 Olympics, Coach Thanh Huong said: “Over the past time, Nhi Yen has prepared very well for the Olympics. She is also very determined to show herself at this competition.”
Of course, there will be no pressure to achieve high results for Nhi Yen because the Olympics is a very demanding competition. Therefore, both of them are very relaxed. Hopefully, Nhi Yen will continue to strive to achieve good results at the 2024 Olympics.”
