Being present at the Cultural Value Conservation and Promotion Area of Lang Teng Village, we could not help but feel sad when we saw that the restored stilt house of the Hre people had been damaged by termites, rotted, and was in danger of being unsafe.
Mr. Pham Van Dien, Lang Teng village, Ba Dong commune said that this is a restored Hre ethnic stilt house, but during the process no one used it, the stilt house must have someone directly living in it to last long.
Tourist groups who come to visit find this scene unsightly. Locals have repeatedly suggested that the dilapidated houses should be demolished or reinvested to ensure the landscape as well as the safety of children when they come here to play.
“I, as well as the people here, feel very sad. When the investment was made to restore the culture of the Hre people here, people were very excited, but now that it has degraded, I feel very sad!”, Mr. Dien said.
The project of Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Values of Lang Teng Village, Ba Thanh Commune, Ba To District (now Ba Dong Commune) was invested and built with an area of 1.48 hectares, with a total investment of more than 10.5 billion VND, restoring community houses, traditional stilt houses, Hre rice huts, buffalo pens...; The project was handed over to Ba To District (old) in 2018.
However, after several years of use, because of not fully utilizing its value, the Conservation Area is currently degraded, many items have been seriously damaged. In most of the buildings, the thatched roof system has been seriously degraded and leaked.
From the budget of Ba To district (old), in 2024, about 600 million VND was invested to restore a community house of the Hre people in the Conservation Area and promote the cultural values of Lang Teng village.
Mr. Pham Van Lam, Head of Lang Teng Village, said that since the restoration of the new stilt house, many tourists have come here, including students from other places, to experience the brocade weaving and culture of the Hre people.
“The stilt house is in disrepair, and tourists are very offended. The village also proposed that the superiors dismantle the degraded stilt house and support some projects here to create a green, clean and beautiful landscape to attract tourists,” Mr. Lam shared.
According to local people, after being completed and put into use in 2018, the Lang Teng Village Cultural Conservation and Promotion Area welcomed many visitors. However, in recent years, due to the degraded state of the Conservation Area, the locality is very hesitant when tourists visit.
In addition, the buildings are increasingly damaged due to lack of daily care and occupancy. Buildings such as rice warehouses, buffalo pens, etc. that are seriously degraded have been dismantled by the local authorities.
Vice Chairwoman of Ba Dong Commune People's Committee Vo Thi Bich Le said that currently in the Conservation Area there is a stilt house that is seriously degraded, causing loss of aesthetics.
“The locality has held a meeting to direct the relevant departments to review and evaluate the current situation, and propose to ask for the province’s opinion on dismantling and creating a clean and beautiful campus. At the same time, it is recommended to support some additional categories for tourists to experience such as brocade weaving, Hre ethnic culture and flower planting to create landscapes,” Ms. Le added.
