This morning, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Pham Thu Hang responded to a request for Vietnam's response to information in the report of the National League of Families of Prisoners of War and Missing in Action in Southeast Asia on humanitarian cooperation activities to search for and account for US soldiers missing in action in the Vietnam War (MIA).

The spokesperson affirmed: “This is distorted and untrue information and we resolutely oppose it. Humanitarian cooperation activities to search for and account for US soldiers missing in action in the Vietnam War (MIA) have been actively and effectively implemented by the governments of Vietnam and the US for over 50 years, helping thousands of US soldiers' remains to be identified and returned to their families."

This is a very meaningful result, contributing to promoting cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war between the two countries and is a vivid demonstration of the humanitarian spirit, contributing to building and strengthening trust and friendship between Vietnam and the US. The effectiveness of Vietnam's MIA cooperation has always been recognized and highly appreciated by the US, considered a model in international relations.

The spokesperson said that in the coming time, the two countries will continue to fully cooperate in this field in accordance with the spirit of the Joint Statement on upgrading Vietnam-US relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for peace , cooperation and sustainable development.

During his visit to Vietnam in mid-July, Mr. Kelly McKeague - Director of the US Department of Defense's POW/MIA Accounting Agency expressed his deep gratitude to the Vietnamese Government, the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP), and local authorities and people for creating favorable conditions and wholeheartedly helping to search for US soldiers missing in action during the war.

He affirmed that he will continue to contribute his voice so that the US Congress, Government and officials continue to support the stable development of Vietnam - US relations, maintain and expand programs to overcome the consequences of war in Vietnam.

Humanitarian cooperation activities to search for and account for US soldiers missing in action during the war in Vietnam were implemented by the two countries immediately after the Paris Agreement was signed in 1973. To date, this activity has achieved positive results, helping the US identify and return the remains to the families of nearly 750 US soldiers missing in action during the war in Vietnam.

This is a very meaningful result for the people and the US Government, contributing to promoting cooperation in overcoming the consequences of war between the two countries in general.
