The Semiconductor Manufacturing International (SEMI) forecasts that Vietnam's semiconductor market is expected to reach 7.01 billion USD by 2028, with an average annual industry growth rate of about 6.69% in the period 2023 - 2028. Vietnam is facing the opportunity to participate deeply in the semiconductor industry.

According to Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung, in the context of the strong development of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, the semiconductor industry is not only the foundation of modern technology, but more than that, it is also the core factor that determines the strength of the digital economy , determining the development of breakthrough technology industries, from artificial intelligence (AI), internet of things (IoT), big data (Big Data) to automation.

In addition, complex developments in global geopolitics have prompted countries to diversify their supply chains and seek more stable and sustainable sources of components.

“Vietnam, with its great advantage of being a country with stable politics, continuously good economic growth for many years, and a young, abundant workforce with a passion for innovation, is a promising destination for investors in the semiconductor sector,” said Minister Nguyen Chi Dung.

Recognizing this opportunity, the Government has issued the Semiconductor Industry Development Strategy to 2030 and Vision to 2050, with the goal of making Vietnam a global semiconductor human resource center by 2030 and a global semiconductor and electronics industry center by 2040.

This goal is not only to participate in the global value chain, but also to build an advanced and attractive semiconductor industrial ecosystem in the region and the world, helping Vietnam become self-reliant and develop sustainably in this field.

To achieve the goal, Vietnam has had solutions to realize it, focusing on developing human resources for Vietnam's semiconductor industry.

It is expected that by 2030, at least 50,000 human resources with university degrees or higher will be trained, 1,300 lecturers will be trained in-depth in semiconductors, national and grassroots laboratories will be built to serve the training of human resources in the semiconductor industry, and an attractive business environment with many incentives for high-tech enterprises will be created.

It is expected that in 2024, the Government will issue a Decree on the establishment, management and use of the Investment Support Fund to directly support businesses in this field in training, human resource development, investment in creating fixed assets, manufacturing high-tech products, etc., contributing to improving Vietnam's position on the global semiconductor industry map.

“Vietnam has gathered the conditions to be ready to welcome and cooperate with businesses and investors from all over the world in the semiconductor industry,” Minister Nguyen Chi Dung affirmed.

In the context of the booming global semiconductor industry, Vietnam is expected to become a center for supplying raw materials, components, and assemblies for the semiconductor equipment manufacturing industry, thereby moving deeper into the value chain of the global semiconductor equipment industry.

With an abundant human resource base and competitive production costs, Vietnam is capable of exploiting these opportunities to grow strongly.

Expressing his views on Vietnam's potential in the semiconductor industry, Mr. Kees van Baar - Ambassador of the Netherlands to Vietnam said: "The semiconductor equipment manufacturing supply chain is very large with the participation of many large and small enterprises around the world in many segments.

Vietnam can fully utilize and promote its existing supporting industry to participate more deeply in this value chain. Equipment manufacturing is the pillar of the Dutch semiconductor industry, and the Netherlands is ready to cooperate with Vietnam to contribute to the overall development of the global semiconductor industry.

Mr. KC Ang - Chairman of SEMI's Southeast Asia Advisory Council, President of Asia, Global Foundries affirmed the growing role of Vietnam in the semiconductor industry supply chain. The size of Vietnam's semiconductor market, according to SEMI, has reached 18.23 billion USD in 2024, achieving a compound growth rate of 11.48% over the past years.

“It can be said that Vietnam is facing the opportunity to participate deeply in the semiconductor industry and has clearly demonstrated its aspiration to become a link in the global semiconductor supply chain,” said Chairman KC Ang.

Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 – SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024 with the theme “Elevating Vietnam in the global semiconductor supply chain” officially opened at NIC Hoa Lac facility. Taking place over 02 days (November 7-8), SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024 is the first and largest international semiconductor exhibition held in Vietnam, chaired by the Ministry of Planning and Investment and assigned to the National Innovation Center (NIC) in coordination with the Semiconductor Industry Association (SEMI).

Held for the first time in Vietnam, SEMIExpo Viet Nam 2024 attracted the participation of more than 5,000 delegates and 100 booths from major technology partners in the semiconductor field such as Cadence, Qualcomm, Intel, Qorvo, Dassault Systemes, Siemens, Tektronix, FPT, Viettel... with the participation of many components in the semiconductor ecosystem such as research institutes, universities, investment funds, businesses, organizations, associations, domestic and foreign experts in the semiconductor field.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of SEMIExpo Vietnam 2024, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung affirmed: “The Vietnam Semiconductor Industry Exhibition 2024 is an event marking an important step forward for Vietnam in its efforts to participate in the global value chain of the semiconductor industry, a field considered the “heart” of modern technology and the foundation for the digital economy.”
