Vietnam strengthens cooperation with UNODC in crime prevention and control

On the afternoon of October 21, at the Government Headquarters, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son received Ms. Ghada Waly, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and Director of the United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) on a working trip to attend the signing ceremony of the United Nations Hanoi Convention against Cybercrime.

At the meeting, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son affirmed Vietnam's consistent policy of supporting and promoting multilateralism and international cooperation in solving global issues, contributing to maintaining international peace and security. Vietnam welcomes the efforts and highly appreciates the role of the United Nations in general and UNODC in particular in supporting countries in preventing and combating all types of crimes, drug trafficking, money laundering, human trafficking, etc.

Assessing that the two sides have cooperated well in recent times, the Deputy Prime Minister expressed his wish to continue promoting cooperation and deepening it with specific cooperation projects and activities.

The Deputy Prime Minister highly appreciated and thanked UNODC for its close cooperation and active participation in the preparation and organization of the signing ceremony of the International Convention against Cybercrime; emphasizing that Vietnam hopes UNODC will continue to accompany Vietnam in promoting the signing of the Convention, contributing to its early entry into force.

The Deputy Prime Minister also said that Vietnam supports and actively considers participating in UNODC programs to assist developing countries in ratifying and implementing the Convention in practice, such as the initiative to establish a center for enhancing cybersecurity capacity in the Asia- Pacific region.

The Deputy Prime Minister particularly appreciated the cooperation between the two sides in the field of drug prevention and control, within the bilateral as well as regional and sub-regional frameworks, notably within the Mekong cooperation framework, and suggested that UNODC explore the possibility of supporting Vietnamese ministries and sectors in implementing projects within the framework of the National Target Program on Drug Prevention and Control.

For his part, the UN Deputy Secretary-General and UNODC Executive Director expressed his appreciation for Vietnam's strong commitment and responsible contributions to the international community's joint efforts in the fight against crime, especially cybercrime, drug crime, money laundering, human trafficking, etc.

Welcoming Vietnam for hosting the signing ceremony of the United Nations Convention against Cybercrime and appreciating the efforts of Vietnamese authorities in preparing for the signing ceremony, Ms. Ghada Waly said that after the signing ceremony, UNODC will continue to closely cooperate with Vietnam to promote countries to ratify the Convention so that it can soon come into force and be effectively implemented.

Ms. Ghada Waly also welcomed Vietnam's initiative to establish a regional training center on combating cybercrime and affirmed UNODC's commitment to cooperate with the Government of Vietnam in establishing and operating the center.

Ms. Ghada Waly affirmed that UNODC will continue to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with Vietnam as well as other countries in the region on crime prevention and control, enhance the effectiveness of implementing existing agreements and initiatives, and is ready to consider building and participating in new appropriate strategies, agreements and initiatives.
