Vietnam supports WTO reform

The Vietnamese delegation led by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien recently attended the first session of the 29th APEC Ministers on Trade (MRT) in Detroit, USA. The session was attended by 21 APEC member economies and observers including the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia- Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC).

APEC Ministerial Meeting focuses on WTO reform.

Chaired by US Trade Representative (USTR) Catherine Tai on May 25, the first APEC Ministerial Meeting focused on discussing ways to support the rules-based Multilateral Trading System (MTS) and effective measures to promote WTO reform. The Ministers also heard from WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala about recent developments at the Organization, especially the implementation of the outcomes of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12) and preparations for the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC13).

The WTO Director-General stressed that WTO members need to be flexible, realistic and demonstrate political determination in resolving outstanding issues to strengthen the WTO's central position in the multilateral trading system, and welcomed APEC's continued implementation of initiatives and activities that contribute to promoting similar discussion contents in the WTO.

Speaking at the conference, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien stated that APEC needs to continue its efforts to implement the results of the 12th WTO Ministerial Conference (MC12), aiming for the success of the MC13 Conference in 2024; agreed that WTO members need to prioritize discussions on WTO reform to improve the effectiveness of this organization's operations.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien received and worked with Japanese Minister of Economy , Industry and Trade Nishimura Yasutoshi.

On the same day, on the sidelines of the Conference, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien received and worked with Japanese Minister of Economy, Industry and Trade Nishimura Yasutoshi and Senior Director of Global Government Relations of Walmart Retail Group, Ms. Sarah Thorn. During the meeting with Mr. Nishimura, the two Ministers discussed multilateral and bilateral trade cooperation.

The two ministers agreed to meet at the 6th Vietnam-Japan Joint Committee on Trade, Industry and Energy Cooperation to be held in Vietnam in November this year.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien received and worked with leaders of Walmart Group.

At the meeting with Walmart Group leaders, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien shared and highly appreciated Walmart Group's strategy of diversifying and ensuring supply sources, and thanked Walmart for choosing Vietnam as a key point for developing the Group's supply chain in the future.

On this occasion, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien directly sent an invitation and requested Walmart Group to send delegations from the United States and offices in the Asia region to attend the Vietnam Sourcing 2023 event organized by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in September in Ho Chi Minh City as the main guests, with presence and presentation introducing opportunities for Vietnamese enterprises to participate in Walmart's global value chain.
