
The 5G network launch ceremony in Timor-Leste on August 21 was attended by Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão, leaders of several ministries and representatives of Viettel Group.
Speaking at the event, the Prime Minister emphasized that 5G technology will open up new development opportunities for Timor-Leste, and acknowledged Telemor's role in popularizing telecommunications services.
Telemor – Viettel’s brand in Timor-Leste – has launched many notable services: 4G in 2017, e-wallet and mobile TV application in 2018, super application Kakoak in 2020, eSIM in 2024. On August 21, the company became the first network operator in Timor-Leste to launch 5G service.
In addition to mobile, e-wallet and super app, Telemor also participates in providing digital infrastructure for the Government , data center, cybersecurity solutions and training at the Central Bank, as well as supporting the digitization of population data.
Besides Timor-Leste, Viettel also deployed 5G in a number of other markets, such as a private 5G network in Nigeria and testing 5G equipment with Du network (UAE).
Timor-Leste, with a population of about 1.3 million, is in the process of modernizing its infrastructure, improving public services and seeking new economic growth drivers, with telecommunications and digital technology considered key sectors.
