VinFast VF 5 runs 160,000 km, battery only 1% depleted, super cheap car maintenance cost

A car owner in Nghe An recently shared his experience using the VinFast VF 5 electric car with a remarkable operating distance. Accordingly, the car was put into use in December 2023, mainly for service purposes, and has traveled 160,000 km to date.

Test results at the official service workshop showed that after nearly two years of use, the car's battery had only deteriorated by about 1%. The car's owner, Mr. Hoang Thanh Tung, said he did not apply any special charging or storage measures during use. The car was charged according to daily needs without controlling the specific charging level.

Along with the battery data, Mr. Tung also shared a table of maintenance and repair costs after more than 160,000 km. The total cost was only about 7 million VND, including: 120,000 VND to replace two light bulbs, 4.3 million VND for three tires, and about 3 million VND for 9 periodic maintenances - significantly lower than a gasoline car with the same distance traveled.

According to him, the cost of charging the electric car is also extremely cheap. On a trip from Thuan An ( Binh Duong ) to Dien Chau (Nghe An) with a distance of 1,520 km, the cost of charging the electric car, according to his calculation, is only 538,000 VND, nearly half lower than the expected fuel cost for a gasoline car. According to Mr. Tung, the cost of the trip is even cheaper than traveling by bus.

In addition, the car owner said that after 160,000 km, the car still maintains stability in all aspects, especially the engine and chassis.

The VF 5 is also often used by him for long trips and picnics. During a camping trip, Mr. Tung used the car battery to power 2 large fans, 3 light bulbs and 1 portable air conditioner. The recorded consumption at that time only consumed about 30% of the battery capacity.

After Mr. Tung's sharing, some other VinFast electric car owners also said they had the same experience about stability and operating costs.

Many studies around the world have shown the same thing. According to research by Stanford University and SLAC (Nature Energy, December 2024) , batteries under real-world conditions, with the support of regenerative braking, intermittent charging, etc., can extend their lifespan by nearly 40% compared to previous tests.

Recent data from Geotab shows that modern electric vehicle batteries retain more than 80% of their capacity after 10–20 years . Thus, the case of the VF 5 running 160,000 km with a nearly intact battery is not an exception, but reflects the real results of modern battery technology.

Currently, VinFast VF 5 is distributed in a Plus version in the Vietnamese market with a selling price of 529 million VND. The car is warranted for 7 years/160,000 km and 8 years/unlimited km for the battery, much higher than the standard in the Vietnamese market - usually only 3-5 years.

In particular, thanks to the third "Fierce Vietnamese Spirit - For a Green Future" policy, users who buy VF 5 will receive a 4% discount on the listed price, equivalent to more than 21.1 million VND. If registering a car in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, customers will receive an additional 10 million VND in their VinClub account to use at brands in the Vingroup ecosystem and those of partners.

Along with that is the free battery charging policy until June 2027, making the VF 5 the most cost-effective car model on the market.
