The chairwoman of the Federation Council (upper house of parliament) of Russia, Valentina Matviyenko, accused the attack in the Republic of Dagestan, in Russia's North Caucasus region, of being a barbaric provocation planned from abroad.

In a post on her Telegram account, Ms. Matviyenko said the attack in Dagestan was carefully planned, calculated in detail, and funded from abroad with the aim of destabilizing Russian society from within.

On the same day, the Interior Minister of the Republic of Dagestan stressed that the attack was a great tragedy for every family and every citizen. The organized attack on these religious establishments was aimed at inciting hatred and sowing discord among the Russian people. However, he affirmed that the government "will not allow external forces to destroy peace and unity" in Dagestan, where people of many religions and ethnicities live in harmony. The attackers will be punished appropriately.

Earlier, the Russian Investigative Committee said that on June 23, many armed people attacked 2 Orthodox churches, 2 synagogues as well as traffic police stations in the two cities of Derbent and Makhachkala in Dagestan. The attacks left 20 people dead and 46 injured. Among the dead were 15 police officers, 1 Orthodox priest and 4 civilians. Security forces killed 5 related subjects and identified them.

The Investigative Committee has opened an investigation into charges of carrying out terrorist attacks; purchasing, storing, transporting and stealing weapons.
