According to WHO, the patient, a 4-year-old boy, was admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit (ICU) of a local hospital in February due to persistent severe respiratory problems, high fever and abdominal pain.
After diagnosis and treatment, the patient was discharged 3 months later.
It is known that the patient had contact with poultry at home and in the surrounding environment. Currently, no one in the family or surrounding contacts reported symptoms of respiratory illness.
There is currently no information on vaccination status and details of antiviral treatment, WHO added.
This is the second case of H9N2 avian influenza in humans recorded in India, after the first case in 2019.
Although the H9N2 virus usually causes mild illness, WHO warns that sporadic human cases may continue to occur because the virus is one of the most common avian influenza viruses circulating in poultry in many different regions.
Currently, the Indian Ministry of Health has not provided any official information about this case.
