Long Dinh Commune: Transforming crop and livestock structure associated with science and technology

In recent years, the restructuring of the agricultural sector in Long Dinh commune (Dong Thap) has achieved positive results, creating momentum for a new development stage.

PRODUCTION REORGANIZATION

Previously, agricultural production in Long Dinh commune was mainly fragmented, heavily dependent on weather and market prices; the story of “good harvest, low price” often happened. When crops yielded low profits, farmers spontaneously switched, and then a few crops later returned to the situation of oversupply. This cycle made income unstable and could not improve people’s lives.

The Executive Committee of the Farmers' Association of Long Dinh commune for the 2025 - 2030 term is determined to be "Solidarity - Proactiveness - Breakthrough - Cooperation - Development".

The change began when the commune implemented the Project of restructuring the commune's agricultural sector from 2020 to 2030. Accordingly, the approach is no longer based on short-term movements or models, but shifts to a production mindset linked to the market and science and technology. Long Dinh guides people to leave traditional farming methods to approach standardized production processes, creating products with stable quality.

One of the highlights of this process is the change in crop and livestock structure. Low-lying, inefficient lands are gradually converted to aquaculture; favorable areas focus on producing high-quality rice or vegetables with stable markets; biological livestock models are developed, gradually reducing dependence on antibiotics and chemicals. All of this takes place not by administrative orders, but by persuasion, training and close technical support from the Farmers' Association.

The transformation of crop and livestock structure has created positive changes in the thinking of many farmers. The rice cultivation model following the IPHM process, piloted on 10 hectares with 45 participating households, has become a prominent example. When farmers reduce the use of pesticides and replace them with biological measures, costs are reduced but productivity remains stable and rice quality is improved.

More importantly, people began to realize the difference between “habitual farming” and “scientific production”. From there, they gradually changed their mindset, formed the habit of recording, monitoring the fields and following technical processes.

The restructuring process can only truly have a foundation when the production infrastructure is consolidated. Irrigation systems, dykes, and dams are upgraded in a timely manner to help localities proactively manage irrigation water sources. Farmers no longer have to worry about flooding during heavy rains or drought during prolonged sunshine. Minimizing weather risks is a favorable condition for them to confidently apply new production models.

At the same time, regular access to science and technology has created important conditions for the transformation. More than 900 members have participated in technical process training; many agricultural vocational training courses have been opened; the use of organic fertilizers, biological products, and non-chemical disease prevention methods have been widely disseminated.

These changes are reinforced by continuous agricultural and fishery extension activities; coordination programs with seed and material enterprises help farmers have more reliable supply sources and gradually reduce the situation of buying poor quality products.

Along with the technology is the change in production organization. Cooperatives in the area, although still modest in scale, have gradually played a connecting role between farmers and businesses. From spontaneous operations, cooperative groups have been consolidated; Thien Phat Cooperative and Nhi Binh Agricultural Service Cooperative have gradually become technical fulcrums and consumption links. When farmers participate in collective economic organizations, compliance with production processes becomes mandatory, helping to make agricultural product quality more uniform, contributing to the construction of stable raw material areas.

Of course, the impact of the movement of good farmers and businessmen cannot be ignored. More than 2,800 households achieving the title during the term is convincing evidence for the spread of the structural transformation movement. Effective households become "real people - real jobs", playing a leading role, sharing experiences and supporting disadvantaged households; with 102 poor households being helped to escape poverty, it is not just a number, but the result of community cohesion.

Another aspect that is often less mentioned in restructuring but plays an important role in Long Dinh is the environmental factor. When switching to more environmentally friendly production models, the soil and water environment is also gradually restored.

Green - clean - beautiful residential areas, garbage collection points, planting hundreds of trees, and the "farmers protecting the environment" movement have created significant changes in rural spaces, creating the premise for moving towards ecological agriculture in the locality.

TOWARDS A MORE MODERN PRODUCTION MODEL

Despite many positive results, the agricultural restructuring journey in Long Dinh still faces many challenges: traditional production habits cannot be changed overnight; material prices are high; the consumer market fluctuates unpredictably; cooperative capacity is still limited...

But because of the difficulties, the restructuring process shows its urgency and correctness. What the locality has done in the past few years proves that farmers can completely adapt, can change and can move towards a more modern production model when properly supported.

Vegetables are one of the local strengths, bringing stable economic value to farmers.

According to Huynh Cong Minh, Head of the Socio-Economic Department of the Dong Thap Farmers' Association, Long Dinh needs to enter a transition period from "following the model" to "following the strategy". The Association must operate in a streamlined, modern manner, adapting to the digital environment; farmers need to be equipped with new skills to become the core, professional force of ecological agriculture; production must be linked to a complete value chain instead of just stopping at the planting or raising stage. This is an inevitable step in the context of the province aiming to become a model locality in ecological agriculture, modern countryside and civilized farmers.

In the next phase, to restructure agriculture in a truly sustainable way, Long Dinh needs to continue expanding production area planning, diversifying conversion models, applying science and technology more deeply into each stage and especially strengthening consumption links. This path requires perseverance on the existing foundation. Long Dinh farmers are gradually becoming “professional producers”, mastering techniques, mastering the market and mastering their own future.
