Lao Cai A principal has been suspended from work while authorities verify information about a meal for 11 students consisting of only two packs of instant noodles mixed with rice, which is considered "unusual".
On December 17, the Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee issued an urgent document requesting Bac Ha district to coordinate with the Departmentof Education and Training and related units to inspect and clarify information reflecting on meals for students at Hoang Thu Pho 1 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities.
Immediately afterwards, Mr. Tran Ngoc Ha, the principal of this school, was suspended from work for 15 days by the People's Committee of Bac Ha district to serve the investigation and clarify information about the boarding meals of 174 students of Hoang Thu Pho 1 school not being guaranteed.
According to VTV24's report on the evening of December 16, each tray of 11 students was only given two packs of instant noodles, cooked thinly, mixed with rice, while the menu board stated that each student was given one pack of instant noodles and one egg. For lunch and dinner, on the board dated November 14, in addition to vegetables, the food for two meals also included 14 kg of pork and 11 kg of bones, but the students were only given a little chopped ham and vegetable soup. Even the vegetables in the kitchen were rotten, so students were mobilized to pick them up.
In the report, the principal said that the students’ food rations were still adequate. For example, meals only had ham and vegetable soup, which was sufficient according to the menu, and the spoiled vegetables recorded on video were not used for cooking. However, the school’s kitchen staff said that food shortages often occurred. The school’s toilets even lacked paper, forcing the students to use chayote leaves instead.

Ms. Chu Thi Duong, Vice Chairman of Bac Ha district, said that the provincial Department of Education and Training and the district People's Committee worked with Hoang Thu Pho 1 school this morning, but refused to provide the content of Mr. Tran Ngoc Ha's report.
"Our view is to clarify the complaints as soon as possible and strictly handle individuals and groups involved if there are violations," said Ms. Duong.
The District People's Committee has established an inspection team, including inspectors, the Department of Education and Training, the District Health Center, and the People's Committee of Hoang Thu Pho commune to continue verification.
In the immediate future, the Department of Education and Training requires the education sector of Bac Ha district to stabilize educational activities, boarding and semi-boarding work, and not let it affect students' learning.
According to regulations, the state supports monthly boarding fees for students in especially disadvantaged communes and villages, at a level equal to 40% of the basic salary, equivalent to VND720,000. In addition to food expenses, students are also supported with housing expenses and 15 kg of rice per month.
