On the afternoon of July 22nd, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Lien, daughter of artist Thanh The, shared the good news: "After more than 40 years, my mother has just been issued a citizen identification card by the Gia Dinh Ward Police. My family is grateful to the police officer named Vinh for his dedicated guidance, assistance, and for creating all the best conditions for my mother to obtain her citizen identification card."
Artist Thanh The's double joy
Amidst the fast-paced modern life, there are artists who quietly spend decades under the spotlight before silently fading into the shadows behind the scenes. One of the most touching stories recently is that of artist Thanh Thế – the leading female figure of the Huỳnh Long traditional opera troupe – who recently received her citizen identification card after more than 40 years without any personal documents, and also officially began receiving a monthly allowance from the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee.

"My mother's name has been on the list to receive subsidies for many years, but because she didn't have a citizen's identity card, she couldn't receive them. The Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association and the Literary Criticism Committee provided dedicated guidance, and this afternoon I took my mother to the bank to get a new card. I also authorized her to receive the monthly subsidy of 2.6 million VND from the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee for impoverished artists. My mother is very happy," said Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Lien, visibly moved.
Not only that, her family will be paid back the amount of over 18 million VND in the past, calculated from the day artist Thanh The received the subsidy, but because she did not have a citizen ID card, the money is still in her account.
Reviving the identity of an artist's life.
After her son – Meritorious Artist Thanh Dung – passed away due to COVID-19, her family’s situation became even more difficult. She lives thanks to the care of her daughter, Nguyen Thi Thanh Lien, who also works as an actress performing at Ky Yen communal house ceremonies but only has occasional shows.
Worries about medication and daily life became a constant burden, while old age and illness eroded her health.

Seemingly forgotten, she received responsible assistance from the Gia Dinh ward police, which brought about a turning point in her life.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Lien emotionally shared her deep gratitude to the police officers of Gia Dinh ward, who quickly supported artist Thanh The to get a citizen identification card after more than 40 years without documents.
So that the artist is not alone.
That journey would not have been complete without the silent but resolute support of individuals in the theater community. The Theory and Criticism Committee of the Ho Chi Minh City Theater Association, especially journalist and director Thanh Hiep (Chairman) and author Nguyen Trung (Chief of the Association's Office) - directly guided and supported the family of artist Thanh The in connecting with relevant authorities.
Previously, the plight of artist Thanh Thế touched the hearts of the community. Meritorious Artist Kim Tử Long organized a charity concert to raise funds to help her pay for medical treatment. Prior to that, the "Mai Vàng Nhân Ái" program of the Người Lao Động newspaper also promptly visited, encouraged, and provided financial support to her.

Artist Thanh Thế expressed his joy upon receiving a gift from the "Mai Vàng Humanitarian Program".
The citizen identification card that artist Thanh The has just received is not just an administrative document. It is a symbol of recognition, a milestone to restore the identity of an artist who once lived and devoted himself to the traditional stage.
It also opens up opportunities for proper care for elderly artists living in difficult circumstances – the "living assets" of the national art and culture.
