DNVN - Although the results of seafood exports in the first four months of the year are encouraging, it is forecasted that in the second quarter and the remaining time of 2024, Vietnamese seafood exporting enterprises will continue to face many difficulties and challenges.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sac - President of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), General Director of Hai Nam Company Limited said that the world economy has just experienced the first quarter of 2024 with many complex and unpredictable fluctuations, thereby hindering the recovery of the global economy .
The aquaculture industry is facing a shortage of raw materials from both aquaculture and wild capture. The aquaculture industry is affected by urbanization, so fluctuations in land use planning for production in many localities and the lack of synchronous land use planning are major challenges for both businesses and aquaculture farmers.
In addition, climate change is one of the most pressing environmental issues today, negatively impacting aquaculture. Exploited seafood resources are also facing difficulties as resources are increasingly depleted, and exploitation output is not enough to meet demand, so additional supply must be sourced from imports.
However, EU market regulations and new Vietnamese regulations related to IUU fishing are making the raw material bottleneck even more congested.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Sac - President of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) spoke at the 2024 VASEP general meeting.
In that difficult and challenging context, Vietnam's seafood exports in the first 4 months of 2024 reached 2.7 billion USD, up 6% over the same period last year... Export items and markets all increased slightly, showing a recovery compared to 2023. Although not equal to the same period in 2022, this is an encouraging result on the path of recovery and development of the industry.
It is forecasted that in the second quarter and the rest of 2024, the recovery of seafood exports will continue to face many difficulties due to risks and uncertainties in the world that continue to affect an open economy like Vietnam.
As the driving force of the global economy and also the market with the largest growth potential for Vietnamese seafood, China is currently facing a new phase of slow and prolonged growth. China's key economic indicators such as consumer confidence index, FDI, stock market, housing index, all show a long-term downward trend.
"Major seafood exporters to the Chinese market may face a decline in demand. China may have to rely on exports to stimulate growth. This will pose challenges in terms of price and competition for international producers," Ms. Sac said.
According to the Chairman of VASEP, in the current context, it is necessary to look at reality, identify difficulties and challenges. From there, find appropriate solutions to build a strategy for exporting Vietnamese seafood towards the target of 10 billion USD in 2024.
To achieve the set goals, businesses need to adapt and adjust their operating plans to suit the market context. In particular, businesses need to diversify export markets to avoid dependence, while increasing exports to new markets, aiming to expand and promote the development of the domestic market.
Promote product image promotion to consumers, build image and recognition for Vietnamese seafood, update information from markets, correctly assess the situation, thereby having the most appropriate and timely response...
