Building a multi-value and sustainable agricultural sector in the capital

From high-tech applications to closed-loop models, the capital's agriculture is shifting strongly from "agricultural production" to "agricultural economy".

Multi-value development associated with the chain of linkages

The capital’s agriculture is gradually shifting towards modernity, intelligence, high technology application, prioritizing clean, organic and environmentally friendly production. In particular, promoting the circular economic model is creating sustainable added value for producers, while contributing to the goal of developing green, ecological and multi-value agriculture.

In recent years, Hanoi has promoted the restructuring of the agricultural sector towards multi-value development, linking production with processing, consumption and agricultural logistics services. Urban agriculture is taking shape on the basis of high technology application, value chain linkage and climate change adaptation, thereby creating agricultural products with high economic value and competitiveness in the market.

In Soc Son commune, Thanh Tam Agricultural Service Cooperative has put vegetables into greenhouse production, combined with a circulating hydroponic system to limit pests and improve resource efficiency. The model helps save about 70% of water compared to traditional farming, while creating stable yields.

With a greenhouse area of 1,600m², the cooperative harvests 600-700kg of leafy vegetables per day. According to Cooperative Director Nguyen Van Hieu, applying technology in vegetable growing not only increases product value, allows off-season production, but also reduces post-harvest loss from 30% to about 10%. Greenhouses help control temperature, humidity and pests, protect crops from adverse weather conditions, clearly demonstrating the trend of shifting from traditional farming to smart and sustainable agriculture.

Not only in cultivation, the livestock model applying circular economy is also bringing clear results. In Dan Hoa commune, Hoang Long Livestock Cooperative maintains a herd of 4,000 - 5,000 pigs and deploys a closed-chain livestock waste treatment model. Waste is reused as fuel, water for fish farming, and especially processed into hydrolyzed protein as organic fertilizer for plants. Thanks to stable product quality, the cooperative supplies about 2 tons of pork under the brand name "A-Z Food Chain" every day.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Agriculture and Environment Nguyen Xuan Dai said that the current development focus is to shift from “production thinking” to “agricultural economic thinking”, focusing on added value and sustainable development. The city currently has 406 high-tech agricultural models, accounting for about 40% of Hanoi’s agricultural production value.

Not only creating economic value, the multi-value agricultural model also contributes to environmental protection, developing rural landscapes, preserving craft village culture and promoting experiential tourism. This is an important factor helping people stay connected to the countryside, reducing pressure on migration to urban areas.

Intensive investment, bringing the highest value

In the 2025-2030 term, Hanoi aims to develop organic agriculture and a circular economy associated with rural tourism and urban services. Investing in infrastructure for concentrated production areas, strengthening value chain linkages and developing agricultural product brands are identified as key solutions.

According to Vice Chairman of Hanoi People's Committee Nguyen Manh Quyen, the city will focus on intensive investment in high quality, shaping towards organic farming, creating multi-value agricultural models, bringing the highest efficiency to people and businesses.

Localities need to promote the transformation of crop and livestock structures, and switch to models suitable to the characteristics, situation, and consumption needs of the capital's people, such as high-quality rice, developing specialty livestock, and raising livestock in a joint model. "Hanoi continues to promote the development of urban agriculture, building agricultural models associated with tourism, in order to bring the highest value" - the Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People's Committee emphasized.

According to Deputy Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center Hoang Van Hong, developing multi-value agriculture is not only an economic solution, but also a long-term strategy to build a green, ecological and modern agriculture. To realize this goal, close coordination between the government, businesses, cooperatives and farmers is needed, creating a solid foundation for the sustainable development of the capital's agriculture in the new period.
