On June 10, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province had a working session with the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) on the management and exploitation of airports in the province.

Phu Quoc Airport (level 4E) currently has 1 runway serving large aircraft, receiving 4 million passengers and 5,000 tons of cargo/year.

Terminal 2 has separate departure/arrival areas, 9 aircraft parking positions. Planning 2021-2030 (vision 2050): level 4E, 10 million passengers/year and 25,000 tons of cargo/year (2030); 18 million passengers/year and 50,000 tons of cargo/year (2050).

Rach Gia Airport was built in 1960. It was then renovated and upgraded twice (1997 and 2006-2007) and repaired in 2014, and is still in operation. However, the number of passengers has decreased sharply from 51,254 (2022) to 33,390 (2023) and 9,536 (2024).

By 2050, this airport is planned to reach level 4C (domestic) and level II military airport, with a capacity of 0.5 million passengers/year (2030) and 1 million passengers/year (2050).

Pursuant to Resolution No. 01/2025 of the Government on investment in expanding Phu Quoc International Airport to serve APEC 2027, the Ministry of Construction transfers the port infrastructure assets to the People's Committee of Kien Giang province to manage and implement the project. The People's Committee of Kien Giang province will select domestic investors, ensuring the nature of the civil-military airport.

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Nhan, Chairman of Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee, said that Kien Giang is aiming to build Rach Gia airport as a multifunctional area connecting with Phu Quoc in the near future.

"The completed airport system, especially the multifunctional Phu Quoc and Rach Gia airports, will connect surrounding urban areas and support Phu Quoc. The province hopes to soon implement the project after approval," said Mr. Nhan.

Mr. Vu The Phiet, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV), said that the unit has quickly implemented Resolution 01 of the Government to review assets, measure and determine the boundaries of state assets to hand over to the Provincial People's Committee to implement the Phu Quoc airport expansion project.

Currently, the airport is still operating normally until a new investor is found. The unit has set up a working group, hired a consultant to evaluate the assets to hand over to Kien Giang province to choose an investor to serve APEC, ensuring safety, no interruptions and compliance with the law.

"The unit supports the Kien Giang Provincial People's Committee in planning Rach Gia airport with a longer-term vision, especially the runway issue (related to land, only the locality can resolve) which can only be resolved by the locality. The unit will provide professional support and is ready to participate in investment if the province needs it," said Mr. Phiet.
