Chinese electric cars begin to penetrate the Japanese market

News from the Zeekr media department on August 12 said that luxury electric car company Zeekr will open 3 new showrooms in Japan by the end of this year.

Zeekr is the luxury electric vehicle subsidiary of Geely Holding Group, China's second largest auto industry group.

Among China's major electric vehicle makers, only BYD has so far entered the light passenger car market in Japan.

The company will open showrooms in three major areas: the Tokyo metropolitan area, the Kansai metropolitan area and the Tokai Line, a spokesperson said.

Zeekr did not mention which models it plans to sell first in Japan.

The biggest difference between cars for the Japanese market and those for the Chinese market is that the steering wheel is right-hand drive in Japan, while in China the steering wheel is left-hand drive.

Zeekr has exported the right-hand drive version of the Zeekr X compact SUV to Thailand, Hong Kong and Singapore.

As of the end of July, Zeekr was present in 30 foreign markets and plans to expand to 50 countries by the end of this year.

Zeekr models currently on sale in China include the Zeekr 001, Zeekr 007 sedan, Zeekr X SUV and Zeekr 009 MPV, all of which are high-end electric vehicles.

The company said they will launch the new model today (August 13), the image on their teaser poster is speculated to be 2 upgraded versions of Zeekr 001 and Zeekr 007.
