The accident occurred at an intersection near Seoul City Hall at around 9:27 p.m., when a car driven by a 68-year-old man hit pedestrians waiting at a traffic light.

Of the nine victims, six died at the scene, while three were taken to hospital in cardiac arrest and were later pronounced dead. Of the four injured, one has since returned home after treatment, while the others are not in critical condition.
Police arrested the driver, who was not found to be under the influence of alcohol according to initial tests. He said his car suddenly accelerated.
"Since the driver was also injured, we have not yet launched an investigation," a police official said at a press conference. "We will launch an investigation when he is able to talk."
"Regarding the cause of the accident, we will quickly and seriously conduct an investigation based on the driver's testimony, surveillance images and security camera analysis," he said.
South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol was informed of the accident and ordered Interior Minister Lee Sang-min and other aides to make "all-out" efforts to rescue and treat the victims.
