On the afternoon of January 31 (the third day of Tet), a number of fishing boats in the waters of Giao Hai commune, Giao Thuy district ( Nam Dinh ) docked for the first "sea voyage" of the year. For fishermen, going to sea on the first day of the year is not only for economic reasons but also a departure with the wish to pray for a year of favorable business, favorable weather, and a full hold of shrimp and fish.

At nearly 3pm on the third day of Tet, two boats carrying shrimp, crab, fish, etc. arrived at Giao Hai fish market (Giao Thuy district) in time for the afternoon market. These are the boats that have been "going to sea" since the afternoon of the second day of Tet.

During the first "sea voyage" of the new year, Mr. Hung's boat (residing in Giao Hai commune, Giao Thuy district) caught more than 600kg of various seafood, with an estimated income of about 8 million VND.

"After 24 hours of fishing at sea, after deducting all expenses, I still earned about 4 million VND," Mr. Hung excitedly shared.

Seafood such as fish, shrimp, crab, squid, etc. are divided by type by boat owner to sell to traders and tourists.

Many tourists are excited to buy fresh seafood at affordable prices.

"Seeing the seafood was so fresh and the price was reasonable, my wife and I decided to buy more than 10kg of shrimp and fish as gifts," said Minh Duc (35 years old, living in Ha Dong, Hanoi ).

Giao Hai fish market has two sessions every day. The morning session is from 4am to 6am and the afternoon session is from 1pm to 3pm.

"During Tet, mantis shrimp and anchovy are the easiest to sell; prices fluctuate around 200,000 VND/kg for anchovy, 120,000 VND/kg for mantis shrimp. After deducting expenses, my husband and I earned about 4 million VND on this first trip of the year," said Ms. Van (boat owner in Giao Hai commune).

Ms. Tran Thi Khinh (a trader at Be market, Giao Nhan commune) said that during Tet, people's demand for seafood increased so the price also doubled but there was no product to sell. After nearly 2 hours of waiting, Ms. Khinh was able to buy more than 10kg of mantis shrimp, 13kg of crab, and various types of fish.

Over the past 10 years, the amount of seafood exploited every day has increased, the products have been diversified, according to market demand, so Giao Hai fish market was formed to consume the products caught by over 1,000 fishing boats of fishermen in communes in Giao Thuy district and neighboring areas.
