The semi-final match of the women's foil event took place this afternoon, May 12. Catantan athlete Samantha Kyle (Philippines) impressed everyone with her resilient fighting spirit. Despite being injured, she still tried to stand up and continue the match.
While competing and leading Cheung Kemei (Singapore) with a score of 15-6, Catantan suddenly fell and suffered an injury. She sprained her ankle and was in a lot of pain. The Filipino fencer burst into tears and had to seek medical attention.

She cried and laughed to reassure her teammates even though her leg was still very painful. Catantan then asked to be put in a splint so that she could return to the competition venue to be... judged to have lost to Wong Jie Xin (Singapore) - who had participated in the final match.
Catantan and his Singaporean opponent in the final greeted the audience, hugged each other and left the arena. In the end, Catantan won the silver medal, while the gold medal went to Wong Jie Xin.
