Zverev and the moment he used his phone to capture the ball mark after arguing with the referee
Nine (Australia) reported that the German tennis player told referee Mohamed Lahyani that the system had "glitched" during the match in the third round of the 2025 Madrid Open. The shot was identified by the system as "inside the court", while Zverev thought the ball was out.
The German had earlier claimed that home player Alejandro Davidovich Fokina's backhand had gone out, but unsuccessfully appealed to the umpire. That prompted Zverev to take a picture of it on his phone, an action that earned him a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct.
In the end, Zverev overcame Davidovich in a hard-fought match, winning two tie-breaks in the final two sets. Winning 2-6, 7-6, 7-6, Zverev posted the photo on Instagram with the caption: "Just leaving this here. This shot was determined to be in the court. Interesting decision" - along with two emojis.
Zverev warned after using phone to take photos during match
"The first set wasn't my best performance, but that's sport, things can change very quickly.
"I was down a set and a break, and I had to fight a lot. I'm very happy with this win. Alejandro is playing the best tennis of his career, so I'm happy to get through it" - Zverev's assessment after the match
In the round of 16 tomorrow (April 29), Zverev will face Francisco Cerundolo (Argentina).
The Australian is currently aiming for a third Madrid Open title and is on a seven-match winning streak following his triumph in Munich.
