13 houses in Can Tho collapsed and had their roofs blown off due to storms

A tornado accompanied by heavy rain in Thanh Phu commune, Can Tho city has collapsed and blown off the roofs of 13 houses, affecting 2 public works. Local authorities are urgently implementing measures to support people to overcome the consequences and soon stabilize their lives.

According to a quick report from the Civil Defense - Natural Disaster Prevention and Search and Rescue Command of Thanh Phu Commune, at 7:00 p.m. on October 2, 2025, a sudden thunderstorm swept through Thanh Hoa Hamlet and Phuoc Loc Hamlet. The tornado completely collapsed 2 houses and blew off the roofs of 11 other houses. The thunderstorm also damaged two public works, including the roof of the classroom block of Thanh Phu 1 Secondary School and the ceiling of the Commune Health Station.

Immediately after the disaster, the Civil Defense - Natural Disaster Prevention Command of Thanh Phu commune mobilized local forces to quickly support people to temporarily repair their houses and move their assets to a safe place to soon stabilize their lives. The recovery work is being carried out urgently; in which priority is given to repairing and re-roofing houses for households that were slightly affected and arranging temporary accommodation for households whose houses were completely collapsed.

On the morning of October 3, a working group of the local government led by Mr. Tran Thai Nghiem, Secretary of the commune and Mr. Le Minh Phuc, Chairman of the commune, together with Mr. Huynh Thanh Viet, Chief of Office of the City Civil Defense - Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue Command, and representatives of the Regional Civil Defense Command, went directly to the scene to survey the situation, visit and encourage the affected families. Initially, the group supported the locality with a total amount of 94 million VND to help households cover urgent repair costs.

According to the Standing Office of the Steering Committee for Civil Defense - Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue of Can Tho City, since the beginning of 2025, natural disasters occurring in Can Tho City have caused an estimated loss of about 3 billion VND. The city government is continuing to direct localities and relevant units to strengthen natural disaster prevention and control work, closely monitor weather developments to have timely and effective response plans, and minimize damage to people and property.
