22 of the world's 25 poorest countries are in Africa. The remaining 3 are Tajikistan, Yemen, and Myanmar in Asia.

There are many ways to measure a country's economic performance and wealth. The infographic below shows the world's 25 poorest countries based on GDP per capita in 2023, as forecast by the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The poorest countries are mostly in Africa, with 22 of the 25 countries represented. The remaining three are Yemen, Tajikistan, and Myanmar in Asia. Burundi, with a population of nearly 13 million, is one of the smallest countries in Africa by area. It has the lowest GDP per capita in the world, at just $308. Gaining independence in 1962 after years of German and Belgian colonization, Burundi has endured five decades of civil strife and corruption. However, the IMF predicts that the country's economy is on a positive track thanks to recent economic reforms. The difference in GDP per capita between Burundi and the world's richest country - Luxembourg - is nearly 415 times. The second and third poorest countries in the world are Sierra Leone and Malawi, also in Africa, with GDP per capita of more than $471 and $482, respectively. The three non-African countries in the list of the world's 25 poorest countries are Yemen, Tajikistan and Myanmar, with GDP per capita of more than $871, $1,100 and $1,200, respectively. *GDP per capita is calculated by dividing the total economic output of a country or territory (gross domestic product - GDP) by the total population of that country or territory.
