Most of the injuries were not life-threatening and had been discharged from hospital, said Yousaf Hammad, a spokesman for the Afghan National Disaster Management Authority.

In Kabul, the Afghan Defense Ministry said emergency rescue and relief teams had reached the quake-affected areas in the worst-hit Balkh and Samangan provinces and had begun rescue operations, including evacuating the injured and assisting affected families.

Previously, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3, a depth of about 28km, with the epicenter near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif and the town of Khulm, in Balkh province.

According to Afghan officials, the tremors were felt in Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province, as well as in the capital Kabul and several other provinces of Afghanistan.
