The event honored outstanding Vietnamese faces who became the first generation of the program.
The NZUA government scholarship was officially announced by the Prime Minister of New Zealand during his visit to Vietnam in February 2025 with a total value of nearly 3.3 billion VND.
This is the first year the NZUA scholarship has been implemented and is also the first scholarship from the New Zealand Government at the university level for Vietnamese students.
The program is implemented by ENZ in collaboration with eight leading New Zealand universities, selecting potential Vietnamese students and encouraging them to pursue their learning and development journey in New Zealand.
After the selection process, 8 talented young faces from different high schools across the country were chosen to receive the NZUA scholarship. Some of them are students from famous high schools in Ho Chi Minh City such as Le Hong Phong High School, Tran Dai Nghia High School, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai High School…
Mr. Scott James, New Zealand Consul General in Vietnam, said that the young people who received the scholarship recognized the diversity in the fields they chose, including business, physiotherapy, science , fine arts, commerce and education. Many of the fields are important and will shape future careers.
"I believe that each of you will make a positive contribution to the development of Vietnam and New Zealand in your own way. Your success will become part of the story of the next 50 years of cooperation between our two countries," he said.
Mr. Ben Burrowes, Regional Director for Asia of Education New Zealand, commented that in the first year of implementation, the NZUA scholarship program received applications of excellent quality, demonstrating the talents, efforts and aspirations of each candidate.
He added that the eight New Zealand universities and the NZUA scholarships are all in the top 500 universities in the world, recognized for their academic quality, research impact and innovative teaching methods.
"The New Zealand Education Agency will expand more opportunities for Vietnamese students to experience New Zealand education. We will also soon launch the New Zealand Secondary School Scholarship (NZSS) 2026 program for Vietnamese students," he said.
Currently, New Zealand's policy is quite open to international students, including Vietnam. International students who complete their bachelor's degree in New Zealand will be allowed to stay here for 3 years to work.
Last September, the New Zealand Immigration Department also announced changes to the settlement visa, which increased points for university degrees in New Zealand, making it easier for graduates to transition to permanent residency.
Thus, if meeting the requirements, international students can apply for permanent residency immediately after graduation or after accumulating 1-2 years of work experience depending on the appropriate permanent residency visa category.
