New Zealand Immigration Minister Erica Stanford said the New Zealand Government announced the above policy on November 2 with the aim of increasing the number of tourists and supporting businesses in the region.
China is now New Zealand’s third-largest tourism market, with nearly 250,000 arrivals in the year to July 2025. The new visa-free rules are expected to attract up to 50,000 more Chinese visitors a year as they travel through Australia, Ms Stanford said.

She said the change would simplify travel, making it easier and more cost-effective for Chinese tourists to experience New Zealand's tourist attractions.
She added that the New Zealand Government had also accelerated visa processing times, now averaging just four days, and removed the requirement for notarized translations of tourist visa documents.
More convenient and seamless travel will encourage more Chinese tourists to make New Zealand their next destination, said Tourism and Services Minister Louise Upston.
