Afghanistan ranks last in the global passport rankings.
According to the Henley Passport Index (HPI) ranking published in October, the Afghan passport continues to hold the last position in terms of power. Afghan citizens are only granted visa-free entry to 24 out of 227 countries and territories, ranking 106th.

Just above Afghanistan are Syria, with citizens enjoying visa-free access to 26 destinations, and Iraq with 29 destinations. These are the countries with the most limited global travel options currently.

Henley Passport Index ranking criteria
The Henley Passport Index is one of the world's most prestigious passport rankings, based on proprietary data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The index compares the visa-free eligibility of 199 different passport types across 227 destinations worldwide.
The point system is very specific. A passport is awarded 1 point for each destination that does not require a visa in advance. This includes visa-on-arrival (VOA), electronic travel authorization (ETA), or e-visa (electronic visa) if they do not require government approval before departure.
Conversely, if a citizen has to apply for a traditional visa and requires prior approval before the trip, that passport will not count towards the corresponding destination points.
Proactive diplomacy is a key factor.
Christian H. Kaelin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, argues that global accessibility is not a given but a result of proactive foreign policy and strategy. He emphasizes that countries actively negotiating visa waiver agreements and maintaining reciprocal relationships will continue to improve their rankings. Meanwhile, countries that participate less in these activities will gradually fall behind in the global rankings.
