Alcaraz, Djokovic compete for bonus of nearly 4 million USD

VnExpressVnExpress09/11/2023

Winning the ATP Finals this season could help Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic pocket nearly $4 million in additional bonuses at the end of the season.

This year’s ATP Tour has a $33.5 million bonus package allocated to the 30 players who earn the most points at the Masters 1000 and ATP Finals, with the top finisher at the end of the season reportedly receiving around $3.95 million, payable by January 2024.

Alcaraz leads the system with 3,285 points thanks to major titles at Indian Wells and Madrid, and a runner-up finish in Cincinnati. In second place is Daniil Medvedev, the Miami and Rome champion and runner-up at Indian Wells. Next are Jannik Sinner, Andrey Rublev and Novak Djokovic, who has 2,270 points despite playing only four ATP 1000 tournaments this year. The scoreboard will change depending on developments at the ATP Finals, which start on November 12 in Turin, Italy.

The ATP's new prize fund is said to be a breakthrough in the distribution of prize money, following the organization's "One Vision" strategy, proposed by president Andrea Gaudenzi in 2020. More than a third of the $33.5 million came from the additional prize fund for last year's Masters events. From 2022, the ATP has committed to sharing 50% of the profits from ATP 1000 tournaments with players playing at this level. After nearly a year of auditing, the amount shared by players is $12.2 million.

The ATP 500 system will also apply a similar division formula from 2023. The ATP plans to continue to edit and update the way profits are divided for players in the coming seasons.

The 2023 ATP Tour prize money totals a record $217.9 million, up $37.5 million from last season. The winner and undefeated winner of this year’s ATP Finals will pocket $4.8 million – the biggest individual prize in tennis history. If the current Masters 1000 points leaders do so, they will collect a total of more than $8 million after just one week of competition in Turin.

Besides Djokovic, Alcaraz, Medvedev, Sinner, Rublev, the three remaining players participating in the tournament are Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev and Holger Rune.

"Here we have the best players of the season and I need to improve a lot," Alcaraz said on the sidelines of a practice session to prepare for the ATP Finals on November 9. "I lost early in Paris because of poor movement and poor fitness. Luckily I have many days to prepare for the ATP Finals so I hope to reach the level I want."
