On November 23, on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg (South Africa), Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the establishment of the Australia-Canada-India Partnership for Technology and Innovation (ACITI).
The initiative aims to build a trilateral cooperation framework in the areas of emerging technologies, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and clean energy.
In a post on social media X, Prime Minister Modi said the trilateral meeting was “productive and positive.” ACITI will strengthen strategic linkages between the three countries to promote innovation for a sustainable future.
According to the joint statement, ACITI will prioritize cooperation on new technologies such as AI, next-generation digital tools and advanced manufacturing.
The three countries affirmed that they will promote responsible AI development, enhance knowledge sharing, joint research and expand exchange programs between universities, businesses and innovation organizations.
Another focus of ACITI is strengthening sustainable supply chains in the areas of critical minerals, semiconductors, green technology and renewable energy.
Australia, Canada and India hope to leverage their complementary strengths – from mining and research to manufacturing capabilities – to support the diversification of global supply chains. Clean energy will be a key area of cooperation, with priorities given to developing green hydrogen, renewable energy and climate-resilient infrastructure.
The three countries believe that existing strengths – Canada's research ecosystem, Australia's energy transition and India's capacity to scale clean manufacturing – will form the basis for joint projects.
The three sides agreed to hold an official-level meeting in the first quarter of next year to develop an implementation roadmap, identify priorities and design specific cooperation mechanisms.
Observers say ACITI is a strategic tripartite cooperation framework, capable of shaping technology standards, digital governance and supply chains in the coming years./.
