(CLO) Police in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura have arrested seven Hindus, accusing them of breaking into the Bangladesh Consulate and vandalizing property, a police officer said on December 3.

Those arrested were participants in a protest organized by the Hindu Sangharsha Samiti, a group that claims to protect Hindu rights, after Bangladesh arrested a Hindu religious leader, Chinmoy Krishna Das, last week.

Police said that on the afternoon of December 2, about 50 people out of 4,000 protesters broke into the consulate and pulled down the Bangladesh flagpole. Police are investigating and have taken disciplinary action against four police officers in charge of guarding the consulate.

In a statement on December 2, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs expressed deep regret over the incident and stressed that diplomatic and consular facilities should not be targeted under any circumstances.

In a post on social media X, Tarique Rahman, son of former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, criticized the attack, saying such incidents only increase divisions between neighboring countries.

Chinmoy Krishna Das, who was arrested at Dhaka airport last week on sedition and other charges, is affiliated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness. His arrest sparked protests in Dhaka and Chittagong, where his supporters clashed with security forces.

India, a Hindu-majority country, also condemned the arrest and expressed concern about attacks on Hindus and other minorities in predominantly Muslim Bangladesh.
