The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) said that the country successfully put the Chandrayaan-3 probe into the lunar orbit.
Chandrayaan-3 has reached the petrilune point - the point in orbit where an object is closest to the surface. After Chandrayaan-3 is in orbit within 100km of the Moon's surface, the lander and rover will separate and land on the surface. The spacecraft is expected to complete its 40-day journey by landing near the Moon's south pole on August 23, then carry out a two-week exploration and experiment mission.
Chandrayaan-3 was developed at an investment of about $75 million. It is the first major mission since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government announced policies to boost investment in private space exploration.
