India has just announced a cooperation plan to deploy a pilot program for e-commerce payments right on OpenAI's ChatGPT artificial intelligence application.
The project, which is being developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in partnership with OpenAI and fintech firm Razorpay, leverages India’s homegrown real-time payments platform UPI. Users can chat, learn about products and complete transactions in the same conversation session on ChatGPT.
“We are excited to partner with NPCI to explore how AI can combine with UPI – one of the world’s most trusted payment networks – to usher in a new era of smart and secure commerce,” said Oliver Jay, Director of International Strategy at OpenAI.
According to NPCI, the pilot program will evaluate the scalability of AI payments across multiple sectors such as retail, services, and e-commerce. The results of the project could pave the way for a new generation of payment models where AI assistants not only advise but also act on behalf of users within a safe range.
If successful, the initiative could position India as a pioneer in the application of AI for real-world payments, while also cementing its position as Asia's leading fintech innovation hub.
