A series of the biggest promotions of the holiday season are attracting American consumers to shop online on Cyber Monday, the event that will officially close the post-Thanksgiving shopping season.
According to Adobe Analytics, Americans are expected to spend $14.2 billion online on December 1, up 6.3% from last year. They spent $11.8 billion on Black Friday and $6.4 billion on Thanksgiving Day, both exceeding Adobe's forecasts. Electronics and fashion are currently discounted by an average of 30% and 26%.
While consumers are looking for the best deals, pressure from rising retail prices, import tariffs from the Trump administration, concerns about jobs and the impact of the 43-day government shutdown have affected many people's spending behavior.
This holiday season, the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimates that spending in the US will exceed $1 trillion, but the growth rate will slow to just 3.7-4.2% compared to the same period last year. In addition, “buy now, pay later” plans are expected to drive $20.2 billion in online spending, up 11% from last year, with the majority of transactions being made on mobile devices.
The shift to mobile shopping is becoming more evident. Adobe predicts that smartphones, wearables, and handheld devices will account for 56.1% of total online spending, worth $142.7 billion. AI-powered shopping assistants are also playing an increasingly important role, contributing an estimated $14.2 billion of the $79 billion spent online on Black Friday globally.
Top-selling products on Cyber Monday are expected to include the Nintendo Switch 2 game console, Labubu dolls, and popular electronics such as the iPhone 17, Google Pixel 10, and Samsung Galaxy S25.
Cyber Monday is a marketing initiative initiated by online shopping site shop.org in 2005, stemming from a statistic by Scott Silverman showing that in 2004, up to 77% of e-commerce websites witnessed a significant increase in transactions on the first Monday after Thanksgiving. From then on, Cyber Monday was born to facilitate customers to shop online conveniently with more deals.
