According to Bloomberg , Apple is collaborating with Anthropic, the owner of AI Claude, to develop a software platform for "vibe-coding." Vibe-coding is a term introduced by Andrej Karpathy, co-founder of OpenAI, meaning the use of artificial intelligence to write, edit, and test programming code on behalf of programmers.
This system is a new version of Xcode, Apple's programming software, which will now integrate Anthropic's Claude Sonnet modeling. Apple will deploy this software internally first and has not yet decided whether to release it publicly. Sources, who requested anonymity because the initiative has not yet been announced, said this.
Open to cooperation
This effort shows Apple is using AI to improve internal workflows, aiming to accelerate and modernize product development. This approach is similar to that of several software companies such as Windsurf and Anysphere, the developer of Cursor, which are providing employees with advanced AI-powered coding assistants.
Apple was initially hesitant to use AI to create software in the early days of artificial intelligence. However, with recent advances in large-scale language models, the company is gradually changing its stance.
Last year, Apple announced an AI-integrated programming tool for Xcode called Swift Assist. The company intended to launch the tool in 2024 but ultimately did not release it to developers.

According to internal reports, engineers complained that Apple's own system could be prone to "illusion," meaning it could fabricate information, and even slow down application development. Collaborating with Anthropic means Apple acknowledges the need for external support, although the two systems may eventually be integrated to operate together.
Among the major programming language models currently available, Anthropic's Claude is considered to have almost the best programming capabilities. According to several sources, Apple's new tool will include a chat window where programmers can enter requests to write or edit code. The software will also test the user interface, a complex process if done manually, and support bug finding and fixing.
Bloomberg reports that the company has previously avoided using third-party models, except for its agreement with OpenAI's ChatGPT, which is integrated to support queries in the Siri virtual assistant. Apple is expected to add Alphabet's (Google) Gemini as an alternative to ChatGPT later this year.
Acceleration strategies in the AI race
Apple is cautiously rolling out the new programming software internally. If the testing process goes smoothly, the company may expand it to third-party developers.
For Anthropic, partnering with Apple is a major step forward. Previously, the company worked with Amazon to provide AI for its new virtual assistant, Alexa+. When Apple considered integrating AI into Siri last year, it only seriously negotiated with Google and OpenAI before officially choosing to partner with ChatGPT.
AI-powered programming technology is becoming increasingly popular. According to Bloomberg News , OpenAI is in negotiations to acquire Windsurf for approximately $3 billion . The launch of GitHub Copilot more than two years ago, a tool that assists in completing code using AI, was the catalyst that made Apple realize it was lagging behind in the field of AI generation.
Apple's AI tools have been criticized by users for being less effective than competitors. Even Apple has had to indefinitely postpone the launch of an improved version of Siri, which was announced last year.
In an effort to regain its position in the AI race, Apple recently restructured its internal organization. The company transferred technical responsibility for Siri and the robotics development team from AI Director John Giannandrea to Software Engineering Director Craig Federighi.

During the Q2 earnings call on May 1st, CEO Tim Cook defended Apple's AI strategy. He emphasized the approach of having AI operating directly on users' devices and across the company's entire operating system.
Cook also affirmed that Apple wants to develop "some of its own AI models," but remains open to collaboration with external partners. "I don't see this as a choice between doing everything ourselves or collaborating entirely," he said.
