WWDC is Apple's annual developer event. This year, in addition to improvements to the iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch operating systems, Apple may reveal the first information about VR/AR mixed reality devices.
Normally, “Apple” broadcasts the opening keynote live on both the website and the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV apps.
Software
WWDC is where all the attention is focused on software previews. Traditionally, Apple will introduce new software for various hardware and make beta versions available to developers immediately after the keynote. The public beta is released within a month, with the final version appearing in the fall alongside new iPhones.
iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 will be the focus of the event. They share many features with each other. In particular, iOS 17 has many new features such as dynamic homescreen widgets (instead of static), a new Control Center interface, Dynamic Island features as well as a new Siri interface.
The biggest rumor is that iOS 17 will open up to third-party app stores, meaning users will be able to download iPhone and iPad apps from outside the App Store, rather than just from the App Store as they do now. However, the feature may only be available in Europe, where regulators have issued new regulations that Apple must comply with.
There's not much information about new features in macOS 14. Apple has been trying to be more consistent with its operating systems over the past few years, so we'll likely see more iOS features make their way to macOS.
A new member of Apple's operating system family is xrOS. Rumors suggest that Apple is naming the operating system for its mixed reality devices as xrOS.
Hardware
The most likely hardware to appear at WWDC 2023 is a VR/AR headset. However, it will likely be released later in the year. Like the iPhone and Apple Watch, Apple often previews its devices months before they are officially released.
The headset is rumored to use the M2 chip, allowing you to control the device with your eyes and hand gestures. The price of the device is rumored to be up to $ 3,000. In addition, some sources revealed that Apple still launched the device despite the objections of the design team because it was too heavy and not ready. However, CEO Tim Cook and COO Jeff Williams asked the team to still announce it this year.
Besides VR/AR devices, Apple may introduce some new Mac computers such as 15-inch MacBook Air with M2 chip, or new Mac Pro.
Even if no hardware is announced at WWDC 2023, it’s still an important event because it showcases all of Apple’s software. But with all the signs pointing to an Apple VR/AR headset, WWDC 2023 will be even more exciting than usual.
