According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs , at the invitation of President Luong Cuong , Hungarian President Sulyok Tamas and his wife will pay an official visit to Vietnam from May 27 to 29.

This is the second delegation of heads of state to visit Vietnam in less than a week (after the delegation of French President Emmanuel Macron), and both countries are members of the European Union (EU).

For Hungary , this also marks the first visit to Vietnam by President Sulyok Tamas. His arrival in Hanoi just over a year after taking office in March 2024 also demonstrates his interest in developing the comprehensive partnership between Vietnam and Hungary.

The visit is all the more significant as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries (1950 - 2025).

Hungary was one of the first countries in the world to officially recognize and establish relations with Vietnam. Over the past 75 years, bilateral relations have witnessed many ups and downs of history, with Hungary's invaluable support and assistance to Vietnam in the cause of national defense and development.

With a foundation of long-standing traditional friendship, the Vietnamese community in Hungary is relatively large, with approximately 6,000 people, mainly concentrated in the capital Budapest. This community also serves as a bridge of friendship for relations between the two countries, contributing to the positive development of other areas of cooperation.

The Comprehensive Partnership established in 2018 has opened a new phase of development, with trade turnover steadily increasing from 2018 (US$645.4 million) to 2022 (over US$1.2 billion).

Bilateral trade volume decreased to US$848.2 million in 2023, but quickly regained momentum, reaching US$932 million in 2024. According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two sides are expected to hold the 10th session of the Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation between the two countries in Hanoi in July 2025, after a six-year hiatus.

In terms of investment, Hungary currently has 21 active FDI projects in Vietnam, with a total registered capital of US$50.66 million, ranking 52nd out of 149 countries and territories with direct investment in our country.

During his visit to Vietnam, Hungarian President Sulyok Tamas is expected to attend the official welcoming ceremony at the Presidential Palace, hold talks with President Luong Cuong, and meet with other high-ranking Vietnamese leaders.

Hungary is ready to train nuclear power plant operators for Vietnam.

Last March, during a working visit to Vietnam, Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Economic Relations Szijjártó Péter met with Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính. At the meeting, Mr. Szijjártó Péter affirmed that Hungary has 50 years of experience operating nuclear power plants using Russian technology.

Therefore, Hungary is ready to cooperate and help train Vietnam in nuclear power plant operation experts, considering this a strategic area of cooperation between the two countries.
