Specifically, the Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Development Center received a young macaque weighing approximately 1kg ( scientific name: Macaca assamensis) from the Dong Trach commune authorities, in the presence of the Bo Trach Forest Ranger Station and the commune police.
Subsequently, the Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Development Center received another red-faced monkey, weighing approximately 5kg (Macaca arctoides), handed over by representatives of the Dong Thuan Ward People's Committee.
Previously, two individuals of the endangered species Group IIB, the rhesus monkey and the red-faced monkey, were discovered by residents who had strayed into residential areas. Recognizing these as wild animals in need of protection, the residents proactively reported and handed them over to the authorities in accordance with regulations.
Immediately after receiving them, the Wildlife Rescue, Conservation and Development Center conducted initial health checks, then placed both animals in a quarantine area for monitoring, care, and rehabilitation; and training to adapt to a semi-wild environment. When deemed suitable, the Center will coordinate with relevant units to select a suitable area for reintroduction into the wild, ensuring the safety of the animals and the ecosystem.
The proactive handover of rare wild animals by local people demonstrates their increasing awareness and responsibility in nature conservation. This affirms the crucial role of the community in jointly preserving biodiversity, protecting forest ecosystems, and promoting sustainable development of Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park in particular, and the natural environment in general.
