Recreating the scene of the king hosting a tea party for his courtiers at the Di Nhien Duong House. |
For the first time, the public and tourists can immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the imperial palace – a place where emperors like Minh Mang, Thieu Tri, and Tu Duc often frequented to enjoy tea, compose poetry, and leisurely stroll with their courtiers in the Imperial Garden. This reenactment takes place at Di Nhien Duong – one of four structures within Thieu Phuong Vien, built in 1828. With its unique "Van Tu Hoi Lang" architecture and relics associated with Nguyen Dynasty poetry, the garden was once the second most beautiful scenic spot in the capital city, ranked by Emperor Thieu Tri in 1844.
The tea party vividly recreated ancient court rituals: from the scene of the king inviting officials to tea, engaging in poetic exchanges, composing seven-word eight-line poems right at the party, to performances of traditional court music such as "Phú lục địch," "Trình tường tập khánh," and Hue folk songs like "Ngự Hương trà ngát hoàng cung." These performances were all reconstructed based on ancient documents and combined with captivating contemporary presentations.
The Imperial Tea Ceremony at Di Nhien Duong is expected to become a distinctive cultural tourism product. |
The Di Nhien Duong space also displays many valuable artifacts such as Zen calligraphy, mirror paintings "Climbing the High Platform," "Misty Perfume River," and bone-embedded poems of Emperors Thieu Tri, Tu Duc, and Thanh Thai... bringing cultural depth and poetic charm to the tea-drinking experience.
According to Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Hai Trung, Deputy Director of the Hue Imperial City Relics Conservation Center, choosing Thieu Phuong Garden as the location for the tea-drinking service is the result of a serious research process on the history and culture of the Nguyen Dynasty. "We expect this to become a distinctive cultural tourism product, gradually improved and elevated to spread the value of Hue's heritage in a vibrant and sophisticated way," Mr. Trung said.
This program is just an initial introduction, opening up new and potentially lucrative avenues for exploiting the heritage of the Imperial Citadel in the future.
