The World Football Federation (FIFA) has officially chosen Argentina to host the 2023 U20 World Cup finals, after deciding to strip Indonesia of the right.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: "FIFA is delighted to announce that this year's U-20 World Cup will take place in Argentina, as the home country of the world champions opens its doors to future superstars."
“I would like to thank the AFA and in particular its President Claudio Tapia, as well as the government authorities, for their commitment to organising this great event at short notice,” Infantino added.
This decision also means that U20 Argentina became the last team to qualify for this tournament.
Previously, U20 Argentina played unconvincingly and was eliminated from the group stage after finishing fourth behind Brazil, Colombia and Paraguay.
However, as host, U20 Argentina is also automatically placed in group 1 seed with Uruguay, USA, France, Senegal and Italy.
In the history of the U20 World Cup, U20 Argentina is the most successful team with 6 championships in 1979, 1995, 1997, 2001, 2005 and 2007.
The 2023 U20 World Cup finals will take place from May 20 to June 11 with 24 teams participating. The teams will be divided into 6 groups, with the top two teams in each group and the 4 third-place teams with the best results advancing to the quarterfinals.
In the final round, the four representatives of Asia include Japan, South Korea, Iraq and Uzbekistan.
The 5 South American representatives are Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay and U20 Argentina. The 5 European teams are England, France, Italy, Israel and Slovakia.
Africa has four representatives including Gambia, Senegal, Tunisia, Nigeria. The five representatives of the CONCACAF region are the United States, Honduras, Guatemala, and the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Fiji and New Zealand will represent Oceania.
The draw ceremony for the 2023 U20 World Cup finals is scheduled to take place on April 21 at FIFA headquarters (Zurich, Switzerland).
