Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao was born in 1970 in a family of Hanoi origin. At the age of 17, Ms. Thao went abroad to study Economics and Finance at university and soon became famous in society with her excellent academic achievements and innate sales talent. When she was a second-year student, she entered the business world. At that time, the Eastern European market lacked consumer goods, everything was scarce, so she sold everything, from electronics to agricultural products from Asian countries such as Eastern Europe. At the same time, she also brought to Vietnam scarce and essential market goods such as fertilizers, steel, equipment, etc. According to Bloomberg News, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao earned her first 1 million USD when she was only 21 years old, by selling fax machines and natural rubber. After returning to Vietnam, she contributed capital to build Techcombank and then VIB - 2 of the first private banks in Vietnam. Nearly 25 years later, she emerged as Vietnam's first female billionaire. Most of her assets come from shares in VietJet and Dragon City (Phu Long) - a 65-hectare real estate project in Ho Chi Minh City. In September 2013, she and her husband attracted the attention of the press and public after news broke that their VietJet Air had ordered 100 Airbus aircraft worth 9.1 billion USD. On May 23, 2016, witnessed by US President Barack Obama and President Tran Dai Quang, VietJet signed an agreement to lease 100 Boeing 737 MAX 200 aircraft from a large American corporation worth 11.3 billion USD.
