Northern and North Central regions at high risk of flash floods and landslides

From 3:00 a.m. on August 24 to 3:00 a.m. on August 25, the Northern provinces, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An had moderate rain, heavy rain, and in some places very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 90-195.6 mm.

Many crops and houses in Cao Bang city were flooded.

According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, from 3:00 a.m. on August 24 to 3:00 a.m. on August 25, the Northern provinces, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An experienced moderate to heavy rain, and in some places very heavy rain, with rainfall ranging from 90-195.6 mm. Soil moisture models show that some areas in the above provinces are nearly saturated (over 85%) or have reached a saturated state.

It is forecasted that on August 25, the above provinces will continue to have rain with accumulated rainfall in the Northeast from 10-40mm, some places over 60mm; Northwest from 5-15mm, some places over 40mm; Thanh Hoa from 20-50mm, some places over 80mm; Nghe An from 15-30mm, some places over 50mm.

Experts warn of the risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides on steep slopes in many areas. Warning of natural disaster risks due to flash floods, landslides, land subsidence due to heavy rain or level 1 flow.

Flash floods and landslides can have very negative impacts on the environment, threaten people's lives; cause local traffic congestion, affect the movement of vehicles; destroy civil and economic works, causing damage to production and socio-economic activities.

At sea, currently, the central and southern East Sea (including Truong Sa sea area) and the Gulf of Thailand have showers and thunderstorms. It is forecasted that on the day and night of August 25, the central and southern East Sea (including Truong Sa sea area), the sea area from Binh Thuan to Ca Mau, Ca Mau to Kien Giang and the Gulf of Thailand will have showers and thunderstorms; during thunderstorms, there is a possibility of tornadoes and strong gusts of wind of level 7-8, beware of wave heights sometimes increasing to over 2m.

All vessels operating in the above areas are at high risk of being affected by tornadoes, strong winds and large waves.

Weather forecast for regions across the country on the day and night of August 25, Northwest: Cloudy, moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain; light wind; in thunderstorms there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts. Lowest temperature 22-25 degrees Celsius, some places below 21 degrees Celsius. Highest temperature 28-31 degrees Celsius; some places above 32 degrees Celsius.

Northeast region: Cloudy, morning with moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain; later scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally heavy rain; light wind; in thunderstorms there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts. Lowest temperature 22-25 degrees Celsius, some places below 22 degrees Celsius. Highest temperature 30-33 degrees Celsius.

Hanoi is cloudy with occasional showers and thunderstorms; light winds; thunderstorms may cause tornadoes, lightning, and strong gusts of wind. Lowest temperature 24-26 degrees Celsius. Highest temperature 31-33 degrees Celsius.

Provinces from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue, the North (Thanh Hoa-Nghe An) are cloudy, with moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms in the morning, locally very heavy rain in some places, then scattered showers and thunderstorms, locally very heavy rain in some places; the South is cloudy, hot during the day, some places are very hot, in the evening and at night there are showers and thunderstorms in some places; light wind; during thunderstorms there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts of wind. The lowest temperature is 25-28 degrees Celsius. The highest temperature is 31-33 degrees Celsius in the North; 34-36 degrees Celsius in the South, some places above 36 degrees Celsius.

Provinces and cities from Da Nang to Binh Thuan have cloudy, sunny days, hot in the North, some places are very hot; showers and thunderstorms in some places in the afternoon and evening. Southeast to South wind level 2-3; in thunderstorms there is a possibility of tornadoes, lightning and strong gusts. Lowest temperature 25-28 degrees Celsius.
