The old “City Village” has witnessed many administrative “shifts” throughout its construction and development, but still maintains its position as a bustling urban area in the eastern part of the province. With its rich history and tradition, the “City Village” has now undergone many changes and is striving to become a civilized and modern city.
CHOOSE A DIRECTION
After the liberation of the South and the reunification of the country, in 1976, according to the Central Government's policy, Go Cong was merged with My Tho province to form Tien Giang province and Go Cong province at that time was divided into Go Cong district and Go Cong town. On March 26, 1977, the Government issued Decision 77 to convert Go Cong town into Go Cong town, Go Cong district, Tien Giang province. In April 1979, Go Cong district was divided into 2 districts: Go Cong Tay district and Go Cong Dong district. At that time, Go Cong town was under Go Cong Dong district and lasted for about 8 years.

However, through practical operation and monitoring in some other places in the area, most of them still retain the town, on the other hand, if the town is left, it will not have the ability to develop socio -economically like some other towns in the region. Therefore, the Standing Committee of Go Cong Dong District Party Committee at this time discussed and reached a consensus to propose the province to allow Go Cong Dong district to restore and establish Go Cong Town, which was approved by the Central Government and on February 16, 1987, the Council of Ministers issued Decision 37 on the establishment of Go Cong Town in Tien Giang province, on the basis of Go Cong town, with part of the area and population of Go Cong Dong district, part of the population and area of Go Cong Tay district. At this time, Go Cong Town consisted of 2 wards, 4 communes, with a natural area of 3,100 hectares, with 48,043 people.
Finding a direction for the “City Village” was also set right from the first days of the re-establishment of Go Cong Town in 1987. This was not an easy task. Speaking at the First Congress of the Go Cong Town Party Committee (December 9, 1988), Party Central Committee member, Secretary of Tien Giang Provincial Party Committee Huynh Van Niem, noted: The important goal of all levels at present is to strive to stabilize the local socio-economic situation, contributing to stabilizing the socio-economic situation of the whole country.
That goal includes stability in production, stability in distribution and circulation, stability in life and creating the premise for the following plans to develop larger and faster. Regarding production, the town has an inner city area and a suburban rural area. In the inner city area, the town has a number of traditional industrial and handicraft establishments and service activities.
The suburban areas mainly produce food, some of which can be grown twice a year, and some grow vegetables. In addition, the town also has a seafood industry. For the inner city, it is necessary to continue promoting industrial and handicraft production. The town's notable issue is to pay attention to science and technology to produce existing products, especially export products.
The town also needs to know how to create an environment to attract tourists, develop services, create more jobs and income for the people. The town is located near the sea, if together with Go Cong Dong, it can create a resort beach, it can attract many tourists. Services include processing services of seafood specialties, services for production and services for people's daily life...
OVERCOME DIFFICULTIES
Recognizing the difficulties and correctly identifying the strengths, after more than 30 years of construction and development since the re-establishment of Go Cong Town, the town had to adjust its economic structure several times to be suitable. Looking at the reality, from 1989 - 1990, the Town Party Committee both made efforts to overcome the limitations and sought new directions in the spirit of innovation of the Resolution of the 6th Party Congress and the Resolution of Tien Giang Province. Accordingly, from the economic structure of the years 1987 - 1988, the Town Party Committee gradually shifted to the economic structure of trade - services, industry and agriculture.

This precise and timely orientation has created a favorable premise for the process of building and developing the town. Putting trade and services first has promoted the inherent strengths of the town and turned the town into a developed urban area. Also from this important orientation, the Town Party Committee has improved its comprehensive leadership capacity, promoted the combined strength of the entire political system, from the town to communes, wards, neighborhoods, hamlets, especially the consensus of the people, through the method of the State and the people working together, has continuously achieved many results in many fields.
The development orientation of the town has been and is being continued. The 6th Congress of the Town Party Committee for the term (2010 - 2015) continued to determine the main economic structure as trade - services, but added tourism to the spearhead economic sector to focus on exploiting potentials and strengths in the direction of industrialization, modernization, and building the town to be on par with the position as the center of the Eastern districts. Just like that, the town has constantly strived to grow.
One of the highlights in recent times is that the town has expanded its boundaries to the North and the inner city area to the North and South. With the construction of belt roads and the development of concentrated residential areas on the extended Truong Dinh Street; the Party Committee and people of Go Cong Town have been honored to receive the title of Town meeting urban civilization standards for the period 2013 - 2015; the town has coordinated with functional sectors to deploy and construct many projects and works of a driving force such as: My Loi Bridge, Go Cong Supermarket, Cong Tien Garment Joint Stock Company, construction of the Martyrs' Temple, Hoa Lan Private Kindergarten... and many other projects and works that have been continued have created an important premise for Go Cong Town to continue to develop.
| Where do "spiritual land, talented people" come from? In the novel "Two Wives" by writer Ho Bieu Chanh, the phrase "spiritual land, talented people" for the land of Go Cong was also explained more clearly. According to Distinguished Teacher Phan Thanh Sac, in Chapter 1 of the novel “Two Wives”, the author also wrote: “Recently, a wandering traveler who had spent ten years wandering around the country, accidentally returned to the source of Khong Tuoc, looked at the old scene, remembered the old people and was suddenly inspired to recite a seven-word eight-line poem, describing the scenery of Go Cong with two lines like this: Son Quy floating in the spirit of culture/ Bao Nguoc, o oa chong tranh waves… Yet in the 19th century, the Son Quy mound became famous and prosperous thanks to the profound literature of the Pham clan (now the Royal Tomb area - NV), just as the Tre mound located nearby became famous thanks to the heroic talent of Mr. Hoai Quoc Cong Vo Tanh; today there is still a temple there. Thanks to those two cases, and later thanks to Mr. Truong Cong Dinh hiding in several mounds to resist the French army when the French first occupied the Go Cong area, Go Cong became known as “a sacred land with talented people”. People became exhausted thanks to the land? Or is it Land depends on people to be sacred? Those two issues can be resolved however one wishes. |
The upswing of Go Cong Town has been welcomed by the people. Speaking at the recent 30th Anniversary of the re-establishment of Go Cong Town, Mr. Pham Van Huyen (Xom Dinh Hamlet, Long Thuan Commune, Go Cong Town) said that in order to accurately assess the great achievements that the Party Committee and people of Go Cong Town have achieved after 30 years of re-establishment and construction, it is necessary to clearly understand the previous difficulties and challenges. After the liberation of the South, according to the Party's policy, Go Cong Town went through separations and mergers. This has caused some difficulties in socio-economic development.
But with the spirit of steadfast revolution and the spirit of overcoming difficulties, the Party Committee and the people of the town on the one hand strive to promote the inherent strengths of the town's people, which are in addition to being industrious and diligent in production labor, they are also quick-witted and talented in economic activities, especially in the field of trade and services of the market people. Currently, the town has built a system of infrastructure, electricity, roads, schools, stations, ensuring to serve the needs of the people, and a green - clean - beautiful environment.
In particular, the inauguration and putting into use of My Loi Bridge has opened up a new development direction for the town: National Highway 50, completing the road and suburban traffic network, creating conditions for socio-economic development, especially the gradual development of industrial parks and clusters and tourism for the town. Truong Dinh Street is wide, clean and beautiful; the majestic Truong Dinh National Hero Monument in the heart of the town, rows of spacious townhouses, new urban areas are forming and developing; the above achievements have contributed to enhancing the trust of the town's people in the Party.
On April 25, 2017, the Minister of Construction issued a decision recognizing Go Cong Town as a type III urban area. This is the result of the tireless efforts of the Party Committee and people of Go Cong Town. Not stopping there, Go Cong Town is preparing to take a new path, aiming to become Go Cong City.
