A vegetarian diet is a diet that typically emphasizes vegetables, fruits, nuts, and legumes while limiting or eliminating meat and fish.
Consuming more fruits and vegetables helps to absorb more plant compounds that have anti-cancer effects. Furthermore, eliminating meat from a vegetarian diet reduces the risk of obesity, which is linked to many types of cancer.

The study, conducted by scientists from Loma Linda University School of Medicine (USA), aimed to further understand the benefits of a vegetarian diet for various types of cancer, including 79,468 participants, followed for nearly 8 years.
Participants completed a dietary questionnaire and were divided into the following groups:
Vegan : Excludes all animal products.
Lacto-ovo vegetarian : No meat or fish but still eat eggs and milk.
Vegetarianism with eggs, milk, and less fish : No meat, but still eat eggs, milk, and fish at least once a month.
Semi-vegetarian : Eat less meat (at least once a month but no more than once a week).
Not vegetarian.
Vegetarian diet reduces the risk of many types of cancer
The results found that a vegetarian diet offers broad protection against cancer, with benefits ranging from gastrointestinal to hormone-related cancers, according to News Medical.
Specifically, compared with non-vegetarians, all vegetarian groups had a lower overall risk of cancer:
- 12% reduction in overall cancer risk.
- Reduce the risk of stomach cancer by 45%.
- Reduced risk of lymphoma by 25%.
- Reduce the risk of colorectal cancer by 21%, according to News Medical .
Vegan diets also reduce the risk of breast and prostate cancer in young men, but this is not clear in older men.
The study adds to the growing body of evidence that a vegetarian diet may help reduce the risk of a range of cancers, from common to rare. There is no evidence that a vegetarian diet increases the risk of cancer, the researchers concluded.
Scientists are calling for more long-term, diverse research to better understand the link between vegetarianism and cancer risk.
