British newspaper calls the future Phu Quoc International Airport "The airport symbolizing the nation's status"

With an investment of 22,000 billion VND, increasing the capacity to 20 million passengers per year before APEC 2027 and aiming to become the most modern airport in the world, these are the reasons why The Sun newspaper commented that Phu Quoc International Airport is a project symbolizing the country's position.

Recently, The Sun, one of the largest newspapers in the UK, published an article about the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project.

The article attracted attention when it detailed the scale and ambition of the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project before APEC 2027.

The Sun describes the new terminal of Phu Quoc airport as having the shape of a mythical bird - a phoenix spreading its wings, symbolizing "national pride and status", and is shaped as a new symbol of architecture and technology in the field of aviation infrastructure in Vietnam.

On June 19, the People's Committee of Kien Giang province issued a decision approving Sun Group Corporation as the investor to implement the Phu Quoc International Airport expansion project.

The investment capital for the project is nearly 22,000 billion VND, implemented in 2 investment phases 2025-2027 and 2027-2030.

The project is being implemented by the world’s leading design consultants – CPG Consultants (Singapore) and Artelia Airport (France). With the goal of completion before APEC 2027, the airport is expected to bring a smart, classy and seamless experience according to international standards, contributing to enhancing the position of Phu Quoc right from the first point of arrival for visitors.

To meet this goal, the Total Airport Management (TAM) model will be deployed at the project. This is a comprehensive integrated solution for all airport operations, from landside to airside, from passenger and baggage flow management to flight coordination and security, helping to optimize operations, minimize disruptions, improve efficiency and passenger experience.

Modern technology helps passengers reduce wasted waiting time and facilitate the check-in process.

In addition, the future airport's runway infrastructure will also be expanded with runway 1 and a new runway 2, 3,500 meters and 3,300 meters long, respectively, to meet the requirements of operating wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, 787 or Airbus A350. In addition, the airport also integrates a series of modern technologies such as biometric identification, remote check-in, and automatic baggage sorting, helping to shorten check-in time to only 15-20 seconds per passenger.

The Sun reported that transportation projects around Phu Quoc have also been comprehensively upgraded, ensuring smooth traffic from Phu Quoc International Airport to key economic and tourist areas.

The newspaper also described: “Phu Quoc is an island off the coast of Vietnam affectionately nicknamed “Pearl Island” for its natural beauty, with its stunning beaches. In 2024, Phu Quoc was named the World’s Leading Natural Tourist Island by the World Travel Awards. In July 2024, the island was again voted the second most beautiful island in the world by Travel + Leisure.”

Not only The Sun, the future airport project of Phu Quoc is also of interest to many regional press agencies. Laotian Times (Laos) commented that the airport upgrade towards APEC 2027 will turn Phu Quoc into an international conference and tourism center. The article affirmed that the airport will be capable of receiving heads of state and high-level delegations within the framework of APEC.

The ASEAN Now Forum (Thailand) also paid special attention to this project. According to them, the design of the phoenix-shaped terminal is not only symbolic but also sets a new standard for the aviation experience in Southeast Asia. The author of the article commented that: “The phoenix design not only symbolizes national pride and status, but also highlights the international reputation of Vietnam’s aviation industry”.

The expansion project with a "huge" total investment, combined with the world's leading technologies today, will bring Phu Quoc International Airport on par with the most modern airports in the world today.

The new airport is not only a gateway but is also expected to turn Phu Quoc into a new transit hub in Southeast Asia, attracting more direct flights from Europe and America in the future. The Sun commented that this is a big, symbolic step for Vietnam - a destination still considered one of the "most affordable tourist destinations in the world".
