School violence - already "hot" at the beginning of the year

In recent days, a video has been circulating on social media recording two students of Hoang Dieu Secondary and High School (Hai Ba Trung District, Hanoi) fighting in the classroom. Specifically, during the break between classes, a 10A2 student, NVTH, repeatedly punched and hit his classmate VMĐ in the face, along with cursing. Immediately after the incident, the school intervened, gathered information, and invited students and their parents to clarify and handle the incident. The school also asked TMN - the person who filmed the clip - to report the incident. Realizing his inappropriate behavior, this male student promised not to continue violating the rules of conduct and school culture.

Currently, the Board of Directors of Hoang Dieu Secondary and High School is temporarily suspending students H. and N. The suspension period is 3 days, from September 16 to September 18. The school's Disciplinary Council will meet and decide on specific disciplinary measures for each student.

The cause of the incident is still being clarified, but the issue of behavior in the school environment has once again been raised. Just like a miniature society, in the event of a collision or conflict, if one person loses control, surrounded by a crowd of strong instigators and a few people stopping them, the consequences will be even more dangerous.

Or recently, just a few days after the opening of the new school year 2024-2025, when there were areas where students could not go to school due to storms and floods, right in front of the gate of Ca Mau High School ( Ca Mau province), there was a situation where students fought due to a conflict while playing soccer.

Immediately after each incident occurs or is discovered, public opinion is outraged. Schools and related units and individuals also come up with solutions to handle and prevent it. But has that really prevented school violence? Because incidents continue to occur in many different forms.

According to the summary report of the 2023-2024 school year, the Ministry of Education and Training assessed that the situation of school violence, social evils and law violations among students is still complicated. The forms of school violence are increasingly diverse, causing public outrage. This is one of the shortcomings of the sector, although in the past, there have been solutions to prevent and control this problem.

One of the reasons many experts point out is that the handling of students who violate the rules is not enough of a deterrent. According to the regulations of the Ministry of Education and Training, there are 3 forms of discipline: warning, reprimand and temporary suspension from school. However, in many cases, the consequences are serious for the victims, causing them to suffer severe damage not only physically but also mentally and psychologically, leading to them choosing to end their lives, such as the case of a female student in Nghe An, suspected to be due to long-term school violence.

If you are unfortunate enough to be a victim of school violence, experts have pointed out some skills to prevent and minimize the impact. According to martial artist and criminologist Dr. Dao Trung Hieu, students should always go with friends after school or during recess, do not go alone. If you are confronted by a bully and do not have outside help, show yourself as someone who is not easy to bully because bullies like to hunt weaker prey.

Psychologist Associate Professor Dr. Tran Thanh Nam (University of Education - Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that it is necessary to have a screening system for students at risk of becoming victims of school violence. Monitoring, forecasting, and regular programs are needed to help parents, students, and teachers identify bullying behaviors and appropriate ways of responding. Adults must set an example. At the same time, we must work with social organizations to prevent and eliminate violent crimes around the school to create a safer school environment for students.
