Son La Newspaper keeps pace with digital transformation.

Over the years, implementing the digital transformation strategy for journalism, Son La Newspaper has focused on promoting digital transformation, building a converged, multimedia newsroom, applying artificial intelligence in product production, and developing the newsroom's social media platforms such as Facebook, Zalo, YouTube, and TikTok to convey information to readers and serve diverse audiences.

In leading the implementation of political tasks, the Editorial Board always closely follows the guidance and direction of the Provincial Party Committee and the Provincial Propaganda Department in developing the editorial office's operational plan. Emphasis is placed on implementing the digital transformation strategy for journalism; attention is given to educating and training reporters, editors, and technicians to enhance their political acumen and operational capabilities, ensuring continuous innovation and keeping pace with the trends of the digital society.

Implementing the "Investment and Upgrading of Son La Online Newspaper" project, with the attention and investment of the Provincial Party Committee, the Provincial People's Council, and the Provincial People's Committee, in November 2022, Son La Newspaper launched its new Son La online newspaper interface, seamlessly connecting with the integrated newsroom. Along with investments in digital infrastructure, digital technology , and information security, Son La Newspaper established a Digital Transformation Team; formed a working group to learn from the experiences of newspapers in other provinces and cities; and assigned members to implement the "5 clear" approach. Son La Newspaper's digital transformation strategy focuses on upgrading the Son La online newspaper, aiming to build a leading multi-media communication agency for the province.

Simultaneously focusing on improving the quality of journalistic works, Son La Online Newspaper offers a diverse range of modern journalistic genres, such as: Emagazines; infographics; video clips, and photo reports, reflecting all aspects of social life. It has innovated its interface, content, and specialized sections; maximized its features, kept pace with multimedia trends, and attracted an increasing number of visitors every day. In January 2023, Son La Online Newspaper launched its application (App) on smart devices and mobile phones. Simultaneously, it launched specialized sections in English, Thai, and Hmong languages, delivering information quickly, accurately, effectively, and engagingly, and expanding its target audience…

A highlight of 2024, on May 1st, Son La Newspaper launched its Podcast news service and utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology to read audio, news, and articles on the Son La online newspaper. On July 1st, it continued to release short videos and weather reports, using software to support the production of fast and engaging programs.

In addition, Son La Newspaper has developed social media platforms, such as the Son La Newspaper fanpage, with over 35,000 likes and more than 54,000 followers; and YouTube and TikTok channels, which are rapidly gaining followers, helping to spread official and accurate information to a wide readership and shape public opinion. Ms. Dinh Khanh Toan, Head of the Women's Association of Group 2, To Hieu Ward, Son La City, shared: "Through observation, I see that the interface of Son La Newspaper's online edition has undergone many changes, with many new sections, fast and accurate information, and engaging content, effectively meeting the needs of readers."

Son La Online Newspaper has leveraged the advantages of online journalism with its "multimedia, serving multiple audiences" features. In the first nine months of 2024 alone, it published 274 issues, containing over 19,000 news articles, photos, and other content; of which, more than 3,000 articles were translated into English, the Mong ethnic language, and the Thai ethnic language.

Ms. Mui Thi Ben, from Ta Hoc village, Mai Son district, currently receiving treatment at the Provincial Endocrinology Hospital, said: "Since the village head and other villagers shared information with me, I have learned about the Son La online newspaper with a Thai language version. I have accessed and followed it daily. From the information on the newspaper, I and my sisters who are being treated in the hospital can keep up with the information, especially the damage and recovery efforts caused by the recent floods. This is a truly meaningful and necessary information channel for the Thai ethnic people."

Son La Online Newspaper has become a useful source of information for Ms. Mui Thi Ben, who is receiving treatment at the Provincial Endocrinology Hospital.

In its digital transformation roadmap, Son La Newspaper has identified its online newspaper as the central focus, integrated with an electronic newsroom; applying digital technology in newsroom management, content production, content distribution, archiving journalistic materials, and managing interactions with readers on online platforms. This is optimized and enhanced by the application of new digital technologies, and newsroom data is stored in the cloud. The process of weekly and monthly planning, content production and distribution for print and online publications, and social media platforms is integrated, while ensuring the safety and security of the information system.

Trinh Trung Hieu, a fourth-year student at Hanoi University of Foreign Languages, shared: "During my studies in Hanoi, I regularly follow Son La Newspaper's online edition to keep up with news about my hometown. I really enjoy the English news section and have shared it with my friends. I find the information very quick and useful."

Besides the achievements, Son La Newspaper faces numerous difficulties due to insufficient human resources; limited skills in applying science and technology and analyzing data; lack of funding for investment in infrastructure, equipment, and new software; and some equipment not meeting the requirements for image editing and special effects to improve the quality of journalistic publications.

With the goal of being fast, accurate, correct, and engaging, Son La Newspaper continues to lead, direct, and focus intensely on digital transformation, with a focus on applying technology, creating, and designing new information products on various platforms, ensuring enhanced interaction with readers. It facilitates training courses on camera shooting and video editing for reporters, editors, technicians, and broadcasters; and provides training for management staff in management skills and innovative journalistic practices. It leverages provincial investment resources to produce new content, music videos, and truly engaging TikTok clips. Emphasis is placed on innovating the content and format of propaganda, raising awareness, responsibility, operational capabilities, and journalistic ethics, closely following the pulse of life to enrich journalistic publications and meet the requirements and effectively fulfill the political mission of the editorial office.
