Village chief arrested for destroying forests in Son La

On June 23, the Investigation Police Agency, Mai Son District Police, Son La Province issued a decision to prosecute and execute an arrest warrant to temporarily detain Lo Van Tiet (born in 1978, residing in Muong Chanh Commune, Mai Son District) for the crime of forest destruction.

According to authorities, from August to September 2022, Lo Van Tiet, in his role as Party Cell Secretary and Head of Pom San village (now Na Ca village, Muong Chanh commune), organized a meeting with the village management board and 59/60 households of the village to discuss and agree to divide the protective forest land in the Huoi Phay area, managed by the Pom San village community, to households, with the purpose of destroying the forest to get land for agricultural production (growing coffee trees).

The total area of forest destroyed and destroyed is 36,400m2, the value of damaged forest products in money is 160 million VND.

After discovering the case of deforestation and forest destruction, the Investigation Police Agency and Mai Son District Police coordinated with functional forces to investigate, verify, clarify and handle the case.
